2010 Fall TV Premiere Week: 10 Thoughts On…The Event Review

10 Thoughts, Reviews, Shows, Top Story

Now that Lost has ended, every network wants to come up with the “next Lost“. A show that is full of mystery and will have everyone talking about it the next day. The problem is that maybe there is not another Lost. Still NBC decided to give The Event a chance to be the next big mystery show.

Here is the synopsis of The Event straight from NBC:

“The Event is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, “The Class”), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancee, Leila (Sarah Roemer, “Disturbia”), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history. Sean’s quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, “Dirty Sexy Money”); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, “ER”), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean’s shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, “Gilmore Girls”). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.”

My First 10 Thoughts on the “Pilot” Episode of The Event:

1. All of the time jumping will easily get confusing.

2. There is plenty of mystery going on here.

3. But are there too many questions thrown out at once?

4. Will we get any answers soon?

5. Jason Ritter is great as the central character.

6. He was the only one doing anything, though.

7. Blair Underwood was decent as the President.

8. It’s just trying to be too much like Lost without being itself first.

9. Isn’t it obvious that “The Event” is probably an alien abduction and the people in the prisoner camp are really people who have either been abducted or aliens themselves?

10. There is room for a show that involves a mystery that needs solving like Lost, but with too many time jumps and too many questions thrown out there from the beginning, will we ever get all the answers? Is America ready for another show like this or will they get tired of all the “we’re so smart, we are going to keep you guessing, and then not give you a big payoff in the end”. I think it’s a safer bet that the latter will happen.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
