Desperate Housewives – Episode 7-1 Review

Reviews, Shows

Hey everyone! Hope you enjoyed your summer (I know I did) and I also hope you enjoyed the season 7 premiere of Desperate Housewives. Of course with every new season comes a series of new questions. Do the storylines look promising? Does the new addition to the cast seem to pay off? And were the drama, comedy and mystery elements effective enough?

Spoiler-free zone:

This season premiere is up with the very best ones. Vanessa Williams’ character is really enjoyable so far and while the show delves into some new stories, it revisits some old ones as well. It looks like a good season!

Spoiler zone:

The opening was very well done. It had a nice little scene where old characters like Rex, Martha Huber and Mary-Alice made a cameo. The way they recapped Paul’s life was interesting and we got to see some scenes from previous seasons. I must say, I am so happy that the mystery isn’t revolving around Williams’ character (Renee Perry) because having another woman with another deep dark secret would be one too many (no offense to Betty, Katherine or Angie). What makes this mystery even more interesting is that I can’t figure out where it’s heading. In the end of the episode it is revealed that both Felicia and Paul have a plan against each other, but I can’t figure out how everything is going to play out. I’m so used to having the new neighbour where all you need to ask yourself is “what are they hiding from their past?” that it’s good to break out of format once in a while. Now the question is more like “what are they thinking?”. Right? I mean why would Paul buy a fricking second house? I guess we’ll have to wait!

Now, my favourite storyline of the episode was Bree’s. I know it’s not the popular choice but for some reason she really gets to me when she goes all crazy/domestic especially when there is a sense of sadness to it. After Orson left the house (who I think we won’t be seeing much anymore) Bree’s “Bree” moment was so well written and executed. I find it almost primitive for Bree to tear off her house’s wallpaper for an entire night. Then we get the introduction of the macho contractor named Keith who is going to help Bree paint her walls. While it does seem to go to familiar ground (remember Jackson, the painter, from season 5?) I do think it is going to turn out interesting. Obviously the writers (I think) are smart enough to not go down the Bree-Karl road again so soon. I think it’s going to be more about Bree and her “always perfect” issue that she had in the first few seasons.

My second favourite story was obviously Renee’s arrival. Vanessa Williams did some solid drama and of course provided some great comedy for the episode. Both her and Felicity Huffman have such a dry sense of humour that their characters friendship is bound to provide some entertaining stuff. I’m glad that Renee is like Vanessa’s character on Ugly Betty but not to the extent that it seems forced. I heard that she is going to stir up some stuff with all four of the housewives so I’m very excited with where this is heading.

Also it’s good to know that Lynette had a threesome.

Moving on to Gaby’s story. Looks like lots of secrets are piling up there. I hope it provides some funny uneasiness between Gaby and (shaved) Carlos, seeing as one knows something the other doesn’t. Turns out Juanita was the switched baby, even though I was 90% sure it was going to be Penny. In a way I’m glad it was because I think Juanita is always fun to watch and the actress playing her does a very good job every time she’s on screen.

The storyline I’m most sceptical about is Susan’s. Her working for an adult website can go in all sorts of directions. I hope it provides some good laughs for the episodes to come but I also hope it goes down the “dirty little secret” path which fits the character of the show.

That’s it then. 1 down and 22 more to go. Who knows what lies in store for us this season? Things are looking good right now though!
