Wednesday Morning Backlash with Triple H as Raw GM and John Cena Turning Heel?

Columns, Top Story

5 Reasons Triple H will be the Raw GM.

1. We all know he wields enough backstage power and is someone Vince trusts, so rather than pretend he’s just another wrestler, he should be the GM. Hell, with D-X gone and having feuded with everyone, what else is there?

2. Edge is a heel wrestler and whoever feuds with him should be a face wrestler so that a physical confrontation is possible. This rules out Stephanie McMahon, who, along with being a mostly full time mother, is a terrible face.

3. Edge is something of a mastermind. Whoever’s outsmarting him should be one, as well. Triple H, despite his clever plans boiling down to “smack him with a sledgehammer,” has the reputation and name of Cerebral Assassin, so he can out-think Edge without it being a huge deal.

4. All the hints were Attitude era star based and Triple H is the last major star of that era. He also notably doesn’t like Bret Hart.

5. H tends to crush a former top heel who can work but isn’t seen by WWE as a true all-the-time franchise guy, such as Booker or Chris Jericho. Well, Edge surely fits.

The WWE’s refusal to turn John Cena heel despite that Randy Orton is now the top babyface has been a major topic of late, although it shouldn’t be. The WWE is right.

The WWE, as a publicly traded company, needs to maintain heavy profits. With so many top draws gone (D-X, Rey, Batista, Jeff Hardy, etc) the merchandising machine needs to continue to churn on. While to many, this means retaining a stale Cena in a boring role, that’s just not the case.

John Cena has not been the number two face in a long, long time. This is a new role wherein he can engage in personal feuds and, hopefully, flesh his character out. When he isn’t dominating the title picture, if not the belt itself, he is far more palatable a performer. Moreover, not worrying about bringing up the flavor of the month and helping them draw means he can show more vulnerability in the mid-card.

Should the WWE want to improve his ring work, away from the spotlight atop the card is also the way to do it. By working with top heels lower down the card, he has the potential to learn his craft more, even if that’s not the case with current feud, Wade Barrett. This is also good for the Miz, who can feud with Cena and get heat on him away from the title, so that when he goes for the title, it’s more important.

Finally, the middle of a down period in the deadest part of the year is not when to turn a major player. Even if Cena turning was hot, many fans would prefer to watch football right now. Turns around the Royal Rumble pay more dividends and that’s also a time when the WWE can develop a new cash cow and make the angle seem more important. So, no, for now, John Cena will remain a face.

That’s it for today, check back tomorrow for the Thursday Morning Backlash at 10am.
