Vulture is reporting that Johnny Depp wants to reteam with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall (Chicago) for a remake of The Thin Man at Warner Bros.
Seeing as how Robert Downey Jr. has elevated his box-office appeal with two franchises (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes), it’s fitting that this turn would see Depp go from a rum-drinking pirate to a semi-alcoholic detective/socialite Nick Charles.
Based on Dashiell Hammett’s 1934 detective novel, the book would be the basis for a six-part film series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. It would also spawn an NBC series that aired from 1957 to 1959.
The Thin Man is a great example of great dialogue in cinema. Snappy exchanges between William Powell and Myrna Loy, along with plenty of champagne and sleuthing, helped the film gain a Best Picture nomination in 1934. In December 2002, film critic Roger Ebert added The Thin Man to his list of “Great Movies” remarking that William Powell “is to dialogue as Fred Astaire is to dance. His delivery is so droll and insinuating, so knowing and innocent at the same time, that it hardly matters what he’s saying.”
