The Dark Tower Arriving May 17, 2013; Other Titles Announced by Universal

On the heels of the news that Judd Apatow’s next comedy will arrive on June 1, 2012, Universal is putting other studios on watch by mapping out their theatrical calendar well into 2013.

Fast Five, the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious saga arrives on June 10, 2011. (Previously announced)

Opening opposite of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will be the Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts film Larry Crowne on July 1, 2011. Written and directed by Hanks, and featuring Taraji P. Henson, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bryan Cranston, the film is about a man who is forced to find a new career and reinvent himself as he enters the second half of his life.

Cowboys and Aliens, starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig and directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) arrives on July 29, 2011. (Previously announced.)

Tower Heist starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller arrives on November 4, 2011. (Previously announced.)

On February 10, 2012, is the thriller Safe House, starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. Safe House tells the story of a young CIA agent (Reynolds) who must transport a dangerous criminal (Washington) to safety after they are attacked at a safe house.

A month later, on March 16, 2012, is another thriller entitled Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale. The film follows a security guard and former smuggler who, facing financial troubles, is roped back into his old life.

Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity), who has written the past few Jason Bourne movies, will step in as director when he helms The Bourne Legacy, a new entry into the franchise yet one that will not feature the Jason Bourne character. It has been given a August 3, 2012 release date.

Several months after the release of Peter Berg’s Battleship (May 18, 2012) will be the Platinum Dunes’ adaptation of Hasbro’s Ouija. It will have a post-Halloween release on November 9, 2012. Two weeks later, on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, is the Carl Eric Rinsch-directed 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves.

The studio has also given a release date to Snow White and the Huntsman, which has Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy circling the project. It will make its theatrical bow on December 21, 2012, the same day as Peter Jackson’s first installment of The Hobbit.

And Ron Howard’s first movie based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has been scheduled for May 17, 2013.
