Pulse Wrestling Report: Smackdown 11.05.2010 — Nexus invades Smackdown, Edge, Kane

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

Smackdown kicks off with a bang—and an immediate match—with Edge entering. Followed by Alberto del Rio. Wait, I thought this was the main event? Must have been mistaken…

Bell rings, and off we go. The match quickly moves outside the ring, but only for a moment of offense as they roll back in. Edge grounds del Rio with a submission hold, and Alberto brings elements of a female barfight to the table by pulling Edge’s hair. Alberto tosses Edge shoulder-first into the steel ring post twice, as we go to…

Commercial.

Come back, and del Rio maintains control. Hinting at what’s to come, Alberto works on Edge’s left arm. Edge fights his way out of a hold that actually looks painful, causing Alberto to go flying out of the ring and land as only a cartoon can. Edge to the top rope, stopped by del Rio. Edge throws a few punches, knocking Alberto down and lands a crossbody for two. Both men trade subtle moves, attempting pinfalls that don’t quite succeed. Alberto lands a solid kick to Edge, ref counts two before Edge grabs the rope, breaking it up. Edge hints at a Spear…but Nexus’s music begins. They pounce on both men, standing tall in the ring sans Barrett.

Grade: C
I like these two together, but there’s just something missing. Not sure what it is quite yet, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them take each other on a few more times.

Otunga has a mic, and claims he’s taking over Smackdown for the night. But Big Show enters now, as well as Rey Mysterio, and Kane. The Blue Crew clear the ring, and all of this action has come to an anticlimactic stop due to Greenday’s monstrosity tearing through the arena.  Gross.

Commercial.

Teddy’s turn to come out. We’ll get to see the five Smackdown boys against the Nexus boys. Interesting.

Dolph enters without Vickie…and he’s facing…JTG? Um, sure!

Here we go. Dolph jumps (Striker: “Vickie better hope they don’t bring back prohibition, or she’ll never get another date”…win.) and backs JTG into the corner. Slow action thus far as they trade a few punched and kicks. Dolph hits the Zig Zag, would get the three count but lifts JTG up to break the count. Locks in the Sleeper, and JTG is out.

Grade: D+
Absolute squash. Ziggler was totally held back by his limited resources. I liked the part where he lifted JTG, wanting to inflict a little more damage, but aside from that gem it was pretty bad.

My lovely Kaitlyn runs out to congratulate Dolph, he hesitates for a moment, seeming perplexed. But Vickie’s voice rattles my skull as she enters, quickly slapping Kaitlyn. As quickly as it began, it’s over.

Commercial.

Teddy Long backstage, Vickie shouting about Kaitlyn, she’ll have a match against her later. Yeah.

Cut to Nexus annihilating Reyburt backstage. And fade out.

Commercial.

Nexus backstage, chatting and laughing, and here comes Josh. He wants to know why they attacked Mysterio. They quickly clear up why Wade isn’t there (sort of).

Time for the triple threat match to be the contender for Dolph’s strap. MVP makes his way out, followed by Cody Rhodes, and finally Drew McIntyre. We get a recap of the dissension between Dashintyre in the previous week, and off we go.

MVP making quick work of the former tag team champs. Drew extends the olive branch to Cody so that they can settle the issue themselves. Immediately reneging on their agreement, Drew knocks Cody out of the ring, chasing him up the ramp and we go to…

Commercial.

Come back, and it’s between Drew and MVP, Cody still recovering outside of the ring. A few near pinfalls, and Cody returns the favor to Drew. Cody gaining momentum on MVP, locking in a submission but MVP fights out, lifting Rhodes up on his shoulders and dropping him hard. After a few failed moves, Cody resorts to attacking Drew, he goes to the top rope with MVP and Drew still outside of the ring, but he’s knocked down by Drew. Superplex position, but MVP found a way to initiate it himself, flinging the other two men across the ring. Cody rolls out after MVP attacks, MVP works on Drew, Ballin’, Playmaker fails, Drew counters with a wicked clothesline. Goes for Futureshock, Cody appears with Beautiful Disaster, MVP tosses Cody out, MVP lands a kick on Drew, for the victory.

Grade: D
Painstakingly slow, and the men were a bit lackluster tonight. The end was predictable, the winner was obvious. Not to mention, the tension between Cody and Drew isn’t quite up to par yet.

Apparently Kofi will replace Rey in the 10-man tag team match tonight.

Commercial.

Returning and now is the time to watch Vickie take on Kaitlyn. What polar opposites. I love Kaitlyn and have missed watching her wrestle. But…Vickie…

Kaitlyn gets to land two punches before Vickie rolls out. Striker and Cole do everything short of bending over for Vickie, and she collects herself outside of the ring. Kaitlyn goes on the offense again, forcing Guerrero back in…and apparently Vickie is going to vomit? What is this? I feel as though I can no longer recap this. Vickie wins.

Grade: WTF
Just awful. Words cannot describe how much I wish Vickie would stay out of a wrestling ring.

Commercial.

Kaval and MVP are backstage, only to be jumped by Nexus. And, the cameraman is nearly giving us a glimpse of their wisdom teeth, he’s so close.

Chris Masters? Not on Superstars? Hmm. Against Tyler Reks.

Lots of chops as Reks’s hair is flailing around, landing some hard-hitting offense. Chris turns the tables, flinging himself at every opportunity, goes for Masterlock, fails. Reks goes for Burning Hammer, for three.

Grade: F
I like these two. Can we give them some decent time? Kaitlyn and Vickie got more time than this.

Commercial.

Nexus makes their way out. Have I mentioned how much I love Hennig and Harris as a part of Nexus? Next we have Edge, Kofi, Alberto, Big Show, and Kane, in that order.

Commercial.

Starting things off with the student facing the master, Kofi against Hennig. Kofi lands the most graceful dropkick I’ve ever seen before tagging in Show. After his patented moves, Edge tags in for a turn at Hennig. J-Gabe tags in, flips around, but eats Edge’s boot. Rope work, upper hand from J-Gabe, and Husky tags in. Laughing maniacally, he backs Edge into a corner and throws a crossbody. Slater tags in, battle of the hair. Justin sneaks a kick when the ref turns around, Heath works on Edge but Edge gains control, tags in Show. Show bounces off the ropes, tossing Alberto out of the corners (and I laughed). Kofi in, as Alberto storms off.

Commercial.

Come back to Slater and Kofi, Kofi landing a killer crossbody from the top rope, then gets rid of J-Gabe, then tosses Slater at the Nexus members. As Kofi launches Otunga, Slater attacks, sending Kofi into the announce table. J-Gabe and Kofi in the ring, Otunga tags in, locking in a submission. Frequent tags from the rest of Nexus, can barely keep track. Justin in with Kofi, Kofi starting to rally and goes for his corner, dragged away. Kofi finally gets the tag to Kane, stares down Otunga, and begins clearing the Nexus corner. Big Red goes to the top rope, hits a clothesline. Chokeslam position, but Nexus jumps. Show clears them, but Kane Chokeslams Show. Edge tagged himself in, angering Kane, Kane reaches for a Chokeslam to Edge, but Edge Spears him, Spears Otunga, for the win.

Grade: B
For once, I like (almost) everyone in this match. The frequent tags from Nexus helped to highlight the ones that shine, and hid the weaknesses of the less-talented ones. The finish was all over the place, in a good way. I liked it.
