When talking to Fighters’ Only, UFC President Dana White announced that 2011 will most likely see a third fight between bitter rivals Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir. Dismissing reports that Lesnar had requested a match with the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 10 saying that “He never asked for Roy Nelson, that’s not true”, White said that whilst he hadn’t spoken to Lesnar “the last thing I did hear was that he wants to fight Frank Mir again. That fight kind of makes sense so… We will probably see Lesnar fight Mir next, I think that the rubber match makes sense”.
To say that the fight ‘makes sense’ is the understatement of the year. The heated rivalry captured the imagination of fans at both UFC 82 where Lesnar made his UFC debut against the former world champion and most of all at UFC 100 where the two met in the headliner of the biggest MMA show of all time. And given the way Lesnar dominated all but a small portion of both matches, one has to believe that this is the best way for the UFC to ensure that the PPV King secures the comeback victory that will propel him back to world title contention.
