Surviving the Holidays with Lewis Black – DVD Review

DVD Reviews, Reviews

While the end of the year is supposed to bring happy times for all, the holidays can sometimes be a little stressful. With that in mind, comedian Lewis Black, along with a few other comedians, historians and others talk about all the different end of the year holidays and how best to… well… survive them.

Starting with Thanksgiving and the ensuing parade, Black and friends walk us through the shopping hell of Black Friday, Chanukah, Christmas (with specific focus on decorations and Santa), something called Chismukkah and finally New Year’s Eve. Pretty much the only holiday they don’t touch on is Festivus.

This is an entertaining look at these holidays. You get I Love the ’70s style clips with comedians like David Allen Grier, Bob Saget and many others. You also get a historical look at where each of these holidays came from, how they started, what they really mean (or are supposed to mean) and what they have become. Then all on hand provide their advice on ways to cut down on stress during the holidays.

If you’re a big Lewis Black fan you might be a little disappointed by this because it’s not Black Unleashed. This is Black doing a special for the history channel. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still funny he’s just not totally in your face funny.

Surviving The Holidays with Lewis Black is presented in a widescreen format. Sound is in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound. This is a fine looking DVD, the transfer looks and sounds fine.

Additional Footage: (2 min.) This is just some cut clips. Nothing really exciting here.

The holidays: Either you love them or hate them. Either way, we all need to survive them and this is a funny look at how to do that. I can’t recommend buying this, but it would certainly make a fun rental.
