Warner Brothers Hoping To Woo Robert Zemeckis For Wizard of Oz Remake

News, Projects

Warner Brothers Pictures is seeking to remake The Wizard of Oz, reports Deadline.

Robert Zemeckis (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, A Christmas Carol) is in talks to direct the film, which would be a live-action movie as opposed to the motion-capture films Zemeckis has been making lately. The film would use the script for the 1939 MGM classic starring Judy Garland instead of trying to reinterpret the original L. Frank Baum story. Warners owns the right to the film’s screenplay.

This planned remake is just one of many Wizard of Oz related projects in development in Hollywood. Other projects include Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel set up at Disney with Sam Raimi attached to direct and Robert Downey Jr. in talks to star, and Dorothy of Oz, an animated musical featuring the talents of Glee‘s Lea Michele.
