Deal Alert: Cult Flicks on Blu-ray (The Thing, Shaun of the Dead)

News

Certain films have cult followings. They don’t set out to be cult films, but because of bad promotion or bad business at the box office they find new life on video or on TV. Box office failure isn’t a prerequisite in labeling something as cult, but makes it easily identifiable. As a youth I couldn’t get enough of The Legend of Billie Jean with the Slater siblings (Helen and Christian) or The Wraith with Charlie Sheen and Nick Cassavetes, son of the famed director. And of course you have movies like The Monster Squad, The Gate, and Rad, movies I came to enjoy the hell out of when I was a kid. To this day I can’t think of “Send Me An Angel” and not think of Full House‘s Aunt Becky doing choreographed dancing on her Schwinn.

Certain directors seem to be put on a pedestal because their work leans more towards cultish audiences. Roger Corman, David Lynch, John Waters, are some of the heavies.

Currently, Amazon is selling a number of titles on Blu-ray for less than $11 that have developed cult followings over the years. Directors of note include Paul Verhoeven, John Carpenter, Terry Gilliam and Edgar Wright.
