Counterfeit Pennies: The Wrestling Hours, Part 5: Austin 3:16

Columns, Top Story

I have watched pro wrestling since I was 6 years old. Unbelievably, it’s been 25 years since my first embedded memories of Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, and in that time I couldn’t even calculate how many hours I have spent watching the different TV shows, PPV programs, and live events.

What I have come to learn is that anything really can and will happen in The Wrestling Hours…

The Wrestling Hours, Part 5: Austin 3:16

“Stone Cold! Stone Cold! Stone Cold!”

These words that Jim Ross screamed on numerous occasions still ring in my ears to this day.

They resonate.

What?

He resonates.

Who?

The Texas Rattlesnake.

The Working Class (Anti-)Hero.

“Stone Cold! Stone Cold! Stone Cold!”

Why?

Because he was the right person at the right time for the right era, post-1980s hangover, pre-TV-PG programming.

The mid- to late-1990s.

The Attitude Era.

The Monday Night Wars.

The Last Golden Age of Professional Wrestling.

And he was right at the heart of it.

“You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere! Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16… Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass!”

The Wrestling Hours are filled with its share of Kings of the Ring, and at least one more will surely be crowned.

But for every coronation, there’s only one Austin 3:16:
