Brothers & Sisters – Episode 5-9 Review

Shows

While it’s not a high point of the series, Brothers & Sisters’ latest episode “Get a Room” does manage to have some comedic charm. Of course, that’s a little hard to see among the slapstick and Three’s Company-ish misunderstandings.

One aspect of the episode that in my option totally, completely works is Kevin getting stoned. I’m sorry, that’s just the most hilarious thing I’ve seen on this show for a very, very long time. I knew what was going to happen the second that waiter mentioned “brownie,” so the suspense of how it would affect Kevin just made everything better. (What? College is a recent memory. I never tried, but almost all of my friends smoked. They weren’t as funny as Kevin is here though!) Everything from speaking Spanish to Sarah scaring the crap out of him is amazing.

On the other hand, I don’t like Nora and Sarah’s story line. It’s just too, well, like I said, Three’s Company. Of course, this Brothers & Sisters isn’t ashamed to use simple misunderstandings for cheap drama (the “Nora’s a lesbian” story from earlier this season, for example). But for some reason this bothers me. It never occurs to Sarah that Dr. Karl is lying because he doesn’t want to tell her he’s going to have sex with her mother? Really? I’d hope Sarah would have more common sense than that.

Anyway, I’m glad Sarah’s mix-up didn’t cost Nora her relationship. Okay, sure, Dr. Karl isn’t the most charming character, but I’m always happy for Nora when she has more of her own life. Between the radio station and her romance, for once her drama doesn’t have to rely on her children.

While I’m on the subject of Sarah, I don’t much care for her and Luc’s misfortune in the hotel room. Sure, the first couple of incidents like dumping ice on him is kind of funny, but after this keeps up for a few minutes, it gets a little ridiculous. Anyway, I’m wondering what will happen with Luc gone for a while since the writers have only been focusing on Sarah’s love life. Maybe they’ll throw in some story about Sarah managing the radio station.

Finally, Kitty becomes a cougar this episode, hooking up with a college student. Forgetting his name is unnecessary in my opinion. She’s already out of character, we don’t need ditziness on top of it. I would’ve liked to see more of her being a professor for the first time and how she deals with that, because every one of her story lines this season has been about her love life. And I also have to ask…where’s Evan? Are we really supposed to believe she hired an overnight babysitter so she can have sex with a stranger? The only reasoning that doesn’t make Kitty look totally irresponsible is that bored, single Justin (who’s missing this episode) offered to watch Evan for some uncle-nephew bonding time.

So even though this episode has more misses than hits, Kevin’s story line is the best humor this show’s had to offer in a long while. Next new episode “Cold Turkey” airs December 12th.
