Were Money No Object on Dec. 15; Featuring Warren Ellis’s Two-Step, and Light.

Columns, Top Story

I guess all the publishers have already gotten all their important product into the stores for Christmas, as this is a pretty light week for trades and graphic novels.

The Book I Would (Maybe) Like to Buy:

Two-Step TP

by Warren Ellis and Amanda Connor; Wildstorm, $19.99

I’m not sure about this book.  On the one hand, we have a Warren Ellis mini-series collected here (I think this came out around the same time as Red), which is always a good thing.  Also, there is art by Amanda Connor, who has established herself as a very interesting artist.

But, at the same time, I can’t help but think that it’s a $20 book for a three-issue mini-series, and I’m sure with a little dedication and work, I could find the whole thing for less than five bucks somewhere….

As to the plot, it sounds like typical Ellis.  There is a ‘zen gangster’ and a ‘camgirl’ running around in some futuristic London.  Half the time, things like this are brilliant, and the other half, they feel like Ellis has just phoned the story in.

The Books I Think You Should Buy:

Light TP

by Nathan Edmondson and Brett Weldele; Image, $16.99

This five issue mini-series was very impressive.  Edmondson, who has previously written the Olympus mini-series at Image, has given us a creepy horror story where some kind of sickness is being transmitted to people through electric light.  When people look into an infected light, they either burn up right away, or become smoldering zombie-like beings, who wander around in pain.

The star of the series is a bit of a jerk.  He doesn’t get along with his teenage daughter, who blames him for driving away her mother, but when things start to fall apart, it is her safety that is paramount to him.

The story has a Walking Dead kind of feel to it, as the main characters try to get themselves to safety.  The book has a very immediate feel to it, and is one of the more effective horror comics I’ve read in years.  Weldele’s artwork is great.  He taps into a Ben Templesmith vein, and manages to make light something to be feared and viewed with mistrust.  This is a very cool comic.
