Marvel Announces “Fear Itself”

News

On December 20, Marvel held a press conference at Midtown Comics in New York City to announce that their big event for this year will be called “Fear Itself.” The story will be focusing on Marvel heroes vs the God of Fear.   It was also mentioned that there will be “eight who are worthy.”   The plan seems to be to build off the fear and uncertainty running rampant in the real world in order to make a good comic story.

Joey Q, Tom Breevort and Alex Alonso were there to talk about it. Matt Fraction appeared via video to explain his role. In addition, they also showed a great trailer with a voice over by FDR!

Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen will be doing the main book, and it will impact numerous titles.  Seven issues starting in April. There will also be a Prologue in March, by Brubaker & Eaton.  The Prologue involves Cap, Namor, Invaders in World War 2.  There will be tie-ins, spinoffs and dedicated series ala Civil War or Secret Invasion, all to be announced.

The story will revolve around a concealed act in the history of the Marvel universe.   Like Secret War, Illuminati or Secret Invasion…I tell you, considering how many comics Marvel has released over the years, you’d think there would be a lot less hidden corners to see.

They also said it will effect and involve a lot of characters, Avengers, Hulk, X-Men, Deadpool.  Dracula came up several times.  I am really hoping Sinestro shows up!

All in all, I thought this was a very good presentation. Personally, I would rather comics remain a little more fun and not fall into the real world mire, but that’s purely personal taste.

Most of the feedback seemed pretty positive, but I found these two tweets to be amusing, so I am reprinting them. As I said, most people seemed positive, so don’t take this as representative of people’s reaction:

DO YOU FEAR… bloated comics prices and events that disrupt typically excellent series purely for profit? #fearitself #marvel [via Twitter]
