Rumor: Mark Wahlberg Might Not Star in Uncharted After All

Casting News, News, Rumors

The cry from Uncharted fans could be heard in the most remote parts of the world when Mark Wahlberg was seemingly announced to star as Nathan Drake in the upcoming David O. Russell directed adaptation of the popular video game series.

One extremely eager fan even ambushed the director of The Fighter, hoping to persuade him to cast popular fan choice Nathan Fillion for the role. The result is … embarrassing.

Besides Wahlberg’s casting, other eyebrow-raising news involved rumors that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci would be cast as the father and uncle of Drake — joining him for some of the adventure.

But now, in an interview with Joystiq, Justin Richmond, the director of the upcoming sequel Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, claims that the news may be a bit premature.

Richmond claims that all this news has been personally denied by David O. Russell.

“He actually called us up and was like, ‘I don’t know what these guys are talking about,'” Richmond said. Wahlberg’s involvement in the film isn’t a done deal either, says the gamemaker.

If that is the case, though, somebody should tell Wahlberg, who has publicly announced to MTV that he will be staring in the film with De Niro and Pesci.

Consider this all just rumors for now. David O. Russell may not even make Uncharted his next film, now that The Fighter has been enjoying such critical acclaim and award nominations. In the meantime, enjoy the video game series — there’s a good chance they will be much, much better than any movie that gets made from them. After all, what’s more fun? Playing a video game or watching a video game being played for you on a big screen?
