Features, Top Story

2010 was not the greatest year for boxing but that did not prevent a select few from having a big year. Let’s take a look at the nominees:

Fighter of the Year

Amir Khan
Juan Manuel Marquez
Sergio Martinez
Manny Pacquiao
Giovani Segura

Amir Khan made his debut in the United States by outclassing Paulie Malignaggi but later put an exclamation point on his year with a dramatic victory over Marcos Maidana. Juan Manuel Marquez dispatched of Juan Diaz in their rematch before taking out Michael Katsidis in a thrilling lightweight tussle. Sergio Martinez bloodied Kelly Pavlik before putting Paul Williams to sleep. Manny Pacquiao made events out of his wins over Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito while Giovani Segura went 4-0 in the year including a big win over Ivan Calderon.

And the winner is…

Sergio Martinez

No one had a better year in boxing than Sergio Martinez. He took the mniddleweight title from Kelly Pavlik in an ebb-and-flow fight, bludgeoning Pavlik’s face in the process. Then in a highly anticipated rematch, Martinez knocked pound-for-pound contender Paul Williams out cold in November. They may have been the type of performances that scare opponents away, but for 2010, Sergio Martinez is the Fighter of the Year.
