2010 Upset Of The Year

Features

One of the great things about sports is pulling for the underdog. Watching the person that was never given a chance actually proving people wrong is one of best stories in sports. Let’s take a look at the nominees for Upset of the Year:

Upset of the Year

Carlos Tamara over Brian Viloria
Gilberto Keb Baas over Omar Nino
Ricky Burns over Roman Martinez
Garth Wood over Anthony Mundine
Jason Litzau over Celestino Caballero

The story of each fight listed above is simple. None of the winners were given much of a chance to do so. Viloria gassed in his light flyweight title defense while Nino lost his light flyweight title to a man with 20 losses. Ricky Burns scored the upset in an exciting bout while Garth Wood took out Mundine in only his 12th fight. Jason Litzau made Bob Arum’s day when he scored the split decision win over Celestino Caballero.

And the winner is…

Jason Litzau over Celestino Caballero

Litzau was coming off an upset win over Rocky Juarez, but the shine from that win was a little misleading as the fight went to the judges early. Against Caballero, Litzau was such a big underdog that Las Vegas didn’t even carry odds on the fight. After twelve rounds, Litzau was declared the winner over a man that many bigger stars had avoided for years. Litzau wasn’t afraid to take on the challenge and was awarded with the 2010 Upset of the Year.
