The SAG Awards were on last night, and I watched most of them. Sorry Screen Actors Guild, you’re just not worth staying up that late. Plus I can just catch a list of winners here. Instead, I focused more on the fashion. And in my opinion, there were quite a few hits on the red carpet last night. But first let’s talk about the misses.
The Misses

I don’t love what any of these ladies have on. And it’s not because Julie Bowen‘s wearing pants – it’s because I don’t like seeing her bony chest. Meanwhile, I didn’t think Amber Riley‘s gown was particularly flattering, which is shame since I usually think she looks great. It’s a crime that someone as hot as Christina Hendricks showed up wearing a glorified bathrobe, and I can’t believe Nicole Kidman managed to make that dress look worse by pairing a necklace with that weird, lacy high collar.

Angie Harmon might have been the worst of the night in her weird, attention-seeking, feathery cotton candy gown. Maybe I don’t like Winona Ryder‘s gown because I don’t particularly like Winona Ryder, but I think the fact that it looks like it was made from toilet paper also has something to do with that. Jenna Ushkowitz‘s gown wasn’t bad, but like so many other women last night, she fell victim to an unflattering cut that seemed one size too small. And speaking of too small, was Eva Longoria hoping to win an award for Least Amount of Fabric Used? She and Lea Michele must have been swapping double-sided tape tips on the red carpet all night.

These women all fell victim to unflattering fits. Amy Adam‘s dress was too tight, Naya Rivera‘s was too…just ill-fitting in general, and I think you can all probably tell that Melissa Leo‘s gown was a particularly poor choice. Too tight and shiny? That is a disastrous combination. Meanwhile, Jenna Fischer appeared to attend the ceremony dressed as Pam Beesley in early seasons of The Office. Why so frumpy? The style, the color…blah. The dress was also too tight through the midsection and didn’t come across well on TV.

Both of these expecting ladies looked great at the Golden Globes, but I didn’t like either of their choices last night. Jane Krakowski‘s gown was too tight and too sparkly, and it kind of made her resemble a disco ball. Not a look anyone should be striving for. Meanwhile, as soon as I saw Natalie Portman I predicted that her gown would awkwardly wrinkle right under her baby bump (ugh, I hate that term), and I was right. For Oscars night, these women should reference some pictures of Jessica Alba, Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta Jones during their pregnancies.

These photos make me sad, because both women usually look fantastic. I have a weird, watching a car accident fascination with the Kardashians (or as my boyfriend says, the Kardoucheians), but I usually love how Kim Kardashian looks at events. This gown just didn’t do it for me. Plus, I’ve seen her wear more makeup to the gym on an episode of Kourtney and Kim Take New York. Meanwhile Jane Lynch disappointed me, possibly for the first time ever. She usually looks classic and elegant. This? Bad 80s prom gown all the way. And we were on such a roll.

And finally, we have January Jones. Were those sleeves a big middle finger to all the people who criticized her barely-there Golden Globes gown? I almost like this dress, but I can’t. Because it looks like it was made from upholstery. She attending the Golden Globes as a tassel and the SAG Awards as a chair. Please, January. Stop attending events in costume. Stop trying so freakin’ hard to be an icon.
The In-Betweens
These women didn’t make me cringe or swoon. They were simply there, and made a misstep or two that kept them off the Best Dressed list.

Mariska Hargitay got it right with the color – rich and stunning – but the fabric and cut of the gown made me feel like some kid probably wore it to prom three years ago. As for Amy Poehler, I’m all for simplistic, but all her dress needed was a tweed blazer to look like she came straight from the set of Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope? More like Amy, nope.

These women all came so close. I loved the cut of Hilary Swank‘s dress, but the color was too close to her skin tone and she would have benefited from brighter lipstick too. Lea Michele‘s gown was fine, but super predictable and I’m tired of feeling like she is trying SO HARD to be sexy. I loved the red on Julianna Margulies, but there was something about the cut of the gown’s neckline that I just didn’t find flattering. As for Claire Danes, I would have loved that gown on someone else. But for her, I thought it emphasized her…modest chest and just didn’t flatter her the way some of her past choices have.
Mini-Hollywood
Here are some kids who I really hope don’t go the Lindsey Lohan route, because they’re all adorable and looked fantastic last night. (Also a special shout-out to Rico Rodriguez, who looked dashing and rocked his opening line about being a shy kid.)

Ariel Winter (13) of Modern Family looked classy, sweet and pretty. I loved the hemline and the black waistband. I loved Hailee Steinfeld (14) of True Grit in her bright, youthful, kind of retro looking dress. On anyone older it would have looked tacky, but I thought it was just right for her. And of course, the adorable Kiernan Shipka (11) of Modern Family looked adorable. Eleven years old is still very young, so I’m glad she’s not wearing something glamorous or older. She’s a kid, and a well-dressed one at that.
Most Improved
These women usually make me cringe on the red carpet, so I was thrilled to see them looking great.

Mindy Kaling has made some weird choices in the past, so I was thrilled to see her in this sleek gown. And I think Helena Bonham Carter‘s gown might be the most normal thing she’s ever donned – on anyone else I might have disliked it, but for her it was great. I’m still recovering from the shock that Annette Bening actually combed her hair and wore a beautiful gown. She actually looks good! And I’m not sure I’ve ever liked one of Tina Fey‘s choices (she doesn’t wear color much either), so I’m forgiving the fact that she couldn’t walk in her red strapless gown because it was actually nice.
Top 8 Best Dressed
That’s right, eight. I couldn’t think of two more (but feel free to share your favorites, maybe I forgot someone) so I’ve ranked my eight favorite looks from last night.

8. I predict that I might be the only person putting Jayma Mays on a best dressed list, but I really liked this gown. I thought the peach worked for her, and the dress felt very old Hollywood. Extra points for lovely hair and makeup.

7. In a red carpet interview Sofia Vergara mentioned that she usually tries to tone down the sexy, and I think all viewers simultaneously laughed. I don’t think it is physically possible for Sofia to tone down her sex appeal, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this blue gown worked her assets. It was crazy flattering, and I’m in love with the color.

6. Oh, Dianna Agron. Every time you hit the red carpet, you reaffirm my belief that you may have the perfect human face. She’s so freakin’ pretty! Not everyone liked her tea-length gown (is that what it is? I’m no fashion expert) but I thought it was amazing. I loved the dark blue and the lace, and I appreciated that she wore something different than usual. In my opinion, the girl can do no wrong.

5. Have I mentioned how much I like color? I seriously love Jennifer Lawrence‘s bright pink gown, especially with the black bow. Fun, young and fabulous.

4. The thing is, in my fantasy life Heather Morris and I are BFFs. There are a few reasons for this. She’s hilarious on Glee. She used to dance with Beyonce. And she knocks every red carpet appearance out of the park. Of all the women who wear these sort of nude, champagne colored gowns, Heather does it the best. This color was invented for her.

3. I have very little to say about this gown because I just love it so much. The fit, the colors, everything. Her hair, makeup and jewelry suited it perfectly.

2. Modern Family star Sarah Hyland is quickly on her way to becoming one of my red carpet favorites. She made my top ten best dressed list at the Golden Globes, but her bold choice for the SAGs makes me love her even more. I wouldn’t choose this color as a favorite, but I love how it looks on her. And the simple cut of the gown really balances out the color. I love it.

1. Once again, Black Swan beauty Mila Kunis takes the first place spot on my list. People need to keep giving this girl good acting roles so she can continue to show up at these awards shows. I love everything about this gown – the color, pattern, and cut. The belt. The fact that she said it was the most comfortable gown she’s ever worn. Her hair and makeup. And she’s just so damn gorgeous! Will she earn the Triple Crown after her appearance at the Oscars? (Should I have said go for a hat trick? Is a hat trick three? Is it obvious I know more about horse racing than hockey?
Overall, I was really impressed with the fashions – lots of fun colors and classic styles, especially from people who are starting to show a great track record for rocking the red carpet.
