Shane Black In Talks To Write/Direct Iron Man 3

News, Projects

Just the other day I was wondering how Marvel is possibly going to go back to solo superhero films after The Avengers comes out next summer. Once audiences have seen their favorite heroes sharing the same screen together, will they still want to watch a movie featuring the a solitary Avengers? Isn’t like going from eating a nice juicy steak to chowing down on a piece of beef jerky?

Well, yesterday it seems Marvel might have an answer — hire damn talented filmmakers to helm the heroes’ solo adventures. Heat Vision reports that Shane Black is in talks to helm the third Iron Man film. While Black’s involvement is said to not be a sure thing yet, the fact that Marvel is considering talent such as Black’s is encouraging.

Black has previously directed Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a modern crime noir that he also co-wrote. Previously, Black cut his teeth writing such well-regarded films as Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, The Monster Squad and The Last Boy Scout.

Marvel is currently searching for a replacement for previous series director Jon Favreau, who recently announced he would be leaving the franchise to helm The Magic Kingdom for Disney.

If Black is being considered, this at least means Marvel is reaching for the top shelf when it comes to filmmakers to continue the adventures of the Avengers. While I’m not completely sold on the idea that Marvel can go back to doing non-team-up movies with Iron Man, Thor or Captain America, this at least is a step in the right direction.
