10 Thoughts on WWE Smackdown 02.18.2011 – Edge, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, The Miz

Reviewing the 2/18/11 edition and 600th episode of Smackdown.

10 Thoughts on WWE Friday Night Smackdown

1. The introductions for all of the superstars in the 12 man tag almost took up the first 10 minutes of Smackdown. Still, tho, it was a very star studded way to start the 600th episode of Smackdown with such a high profile match featuring most of WWE’s top talent.

2. Seemingly everything was fine with Lay Cool this week, although Michelle McCool blamed her “foot injury” on Layla’s hard head while on commentary.

3. WWE replayed the entire reveal of the Host of Wrestlemania, none other than The Great One, The Rock. The way the Rock ripped on John Cena, it really is too bad that John Cena and The Rock couldn’t square off at Wrestlemania 27. That would be a classic Wrestlemania grudge match and instant Wrestlemania moment with their in-ring face off.

4. One of the things WWE really does well is utilize their endless library of footage to put together some of the most memorable moments in the form of video packages. For the 600th celebration of Smackdown, WWE chose some of it’s most memorable moments from the first Smackdown Main Event of The Rock vs. Triple H and referee HBK’s superkick during the People’s Elbow, Mr. McMahon’s Post 911 patriotic speech, Eddie Guerrero’s championship celebration and the Stone Cold Steve Austin/Booker T brawl in the super market.

5. Kofi Kingston in the span of two weeks has had high profile matches with both top heels from Raw and Smackdown. While both were losing efforts, just by getting the rub working the heels on the Road to Wrestlemania, WWE is showing Kofi is on the cusp of superstardom. Kofi still has a ways to go in terms of mic skill to carry his end of storylines, but Kofi has all the athletic tools to be a top star, arguably the most athletic/agile member of the roster.

6. Thankfully The Corre’s music has been remixed to give it a rock and roll sound instead of the pop sound it had when it first debuted with Wade and the group. I loved Big Show’s intensity when he came down to save Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov from The Corre. You can see it in The Big Show’s eyes how bad he wanted Ezekiel until the heels pulled big Zeke back. Nice anticipation and build up to the eventual meeting between these two monsters.

7.  So on the same night Dolph Ziggler officially becomes a WWE World Champion, he is revealed to have been behind the attack on Teddy Long, forced into a rematch with the rehired Edge(who was fired at the end of the 12 man tag by Vickie) and then fired himself by Teddy Long after he is speared and pinned by the 11 time world champion Edge. This now begs the question of who will be taking Dolph’s spot at the Elimination Chamber? On the flip side, if I was a gambling man, I’d put money on Dolph Ziggler taking out R-Truth and entering the RAW chamber this Sunday.

8.  Line Of the Night LON: Booker T to Michael Cole after his orgasmic intro of the WWE Champion, The Miz

Booker T– “Ya know while your standing you forgot something, Cole.”

Cole-“What?”

Booker T– “Your Pom-Poms.”

9. Match of the Night:

12 man tag team match

Edge (c ), John Cena, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, John Morrison and R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk, King Sheamus, Kane, Drew McIntyre and Wade Barrett

So much quick and exciting action and the crowd was really into it. The finish was a rapid fire execution of all the participants finishers until it finally came down to Rey hitting a double 619 on Barrett and Ziggler, ending with Edge spearing Ziggler for the pin. Very cool finish to this big time match.

10. Final Show Thoughts:

While maybe not the best Smackdown in history nor the biggest or most memorable, there definitely was some significant changes by the end of this week’s 600th Smackdown. Not only was Edge stripped of his championship and seen it awarded to Ziggler, but Edge won it back later in the show when Teddy Long returned to his position. Two official title changes in one night was done last year almost to the day, but involved three men, Batista, John Cena and Sheamus. The last time it involved three title changes has to go back to October 2007 when Orton was awarded the belt by forfeit from Cena, then lost to Triple H and then Orton gained it back in the main event. I think it’s a given Dolph will go to Raw and Kelly Kelly should be rehired next week by Teddy Long. This might lead to a heel Kelly Kelly joining Drew McIntyre to feud with Edge. The Road to Wrestlemania will be hitting it’s next biggest stop this Sunday at the Elimination Chamber PPV. My picks will be in the next edition of the Round Table.

That is all.
