The Book I Think You Should Buy:

Wildcats Version 3.0 Year 2

by Joe Casey, Dustin Nguyen, Sean Casey, and Duncan Rouleau; DC, $24.99

I have so much love for this title, it’s ridiculous.  This collection, pulling together the second half of Joe Casey’s Wildcats Version 3.0, is a perfect case study in a few things:

1.  Creating a credible group of corporate superheroes.  This is the model for the work that Matt Fraction’s been doing on Invincible Iron Man for the last three years (especially as Stark moves in to making cars).

2.  How to completely mess up a viable and critically-acclaimed series, only to have it never recover.  Sure, sales on this title weren’t great for the time (most creators would sacrifice a small body part for sales like this today), but this was a much-loved series that DC/Wildstorm cut off at the knees, and forced a cancellation on.  Granted, Casey was allowed to finish up his story, unlike the people working on its sister book, Stormwatch: Team Achilles, which just stopped, but it still sticks in my craw.  And look how it’s all turned out for the Wildcats and Wildstorm.  Oh, that’s right, that’s all gone now.

So, if you are interested in seeing what could have been, and reading a really good, ground-breaking comic, you should pick this up.  If for nothing else, get it for the awesome artwork by Dustin Nguyen and Duncan Rouleau.  It really was good (treat yourself and get the first volume too).

So, what would you buy Were Money No Object?
