The first round voting has ended and there was really only 1 MAJOR upset as one of the top 16 seeds goes down in the first round. The #15 overall seed and the #4 seed in the CBS Region, Walter White from Breaking Bad went down to the animated Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. I was definitely surprised by that, because Breaking Bad is one of the best shows on television. But it’s on cable and Family Guy is on FOX, so perhaps there is not as many people who watch Breaking Bad.
The CBS region could also be called the “comeback bracket”. Five matchups had characters that led early, but lost when some votes late this week went against them. Jethro Gibbs, Charle Kelly, Nikita, Clay Morrow, and Anna V all pulled out close victories when it looked like they were going to lose earlier this week.
In contrast, the ABC region went pretty much as expected with there being only 1 close matchup. John Casey pulled out the win over Charlie Harper by just 2 votes. Again I was shocked that Breaking Bad went 0-2 with Jesse Pinkman falling fairly easily to Stephen Colbert.
The Fox Region was an interesting one for sure. There was either complete blowups with Sue Sylvester and Gregory House dominating or extremely close matchups. Nucky Thompson was another comeback winner in this bracket. But there were two matchups in the entire first round that came down to 1 single vote. The #13 overall seed and #4 seed in this region, Raylan Givens almost lost to Ed Goodson, but in the end Raylan wins by 1. Russell Hantz tried his best to comeback and win, but he also lost by 1 vote as Erin Reagan-Boyle narrowly defeats him. Ironically enough, those two will face each other in the second round. Two other close matchups were Gus pulling out a comeback win and Boston Rob holding off Bill Henderickson. Those two will face off each other in the next round as well.
Finally, the NBC region was went pretty much as planned with a couple of close matchups. Anthony DiNozzo and Gemma Teller Morrow pulled out close wins, but not as close as some of the other matchups we have seen in the first round. The biggest story from this region is that Barney Stinson DESTROYED Casey with 94% of the vote. By far the largest margin of victory in the first round.
So looking at the overall first round voting results, I thought it was interesting that all 4 animated characters won their first round matchups. I was a little surprised by that, but would be even more surprised if all 4 advanced to the next round. The Office had the most characters in the tournament and they went 5-1 in the first round with Erin almost making it perfect for them. 30 Rock was tied for second with the second most characters in the tournament and they went 4-0. How far can these characters go? On the other hand, Glee also had 4 characters but they went 1-3.
