Inside Pulse Best TV Character Tournament 2011 – Third Round Voting Begins

Features, Shows, Top Story

The second round voting has ended and there were plenty of upsets from this round. Five of the top 16 seeds went down in the second round. Not only did the overall #12, #11, #8, #6 seeds all lose, but so did one of the #1 seeds and overall #4 seed, Sue Sylvester. That means there are only 10 of the top 16 seeds left in the final 32 characters. But before we get there, we need to break down the second round action.

The ABC Region featured one BIG upset with the #2 seed from that region and overall #8 seed, Don Draper, losing to The Office‘s Andy Bernard. Most of the matchups from this region were extremely close with less than 60% of the vote needed to win. One matchup between Kenneth Parcell and Chuck Bartowski went back and forth with only 4 votes separating them in the end. However, there were 3 winners who easily won by semi-blowout margins with over 75% of the vote in Jack Donaghy, Michael Scott, and Stephen Colbert. The big surprise to me from this region was that Homer Simpson is still alive.

The FOX region had the BIGGEST upset this round when the #1 seed from this region and #4 overall seed, Sue Sylvester, got defeated by Marshal Eriksen. So goodbye Glee from this tournament. Another upset from the same region was #3 and overall #12 seed, Eric Taylor, went down to Penny. In fact, this was the largest margin of victory from this region, which was a little surprising. One close matchups were Sam Axe and Brick Heck. But the most close back-and-forth matchup was Boston Rob and Gus Guster with Boston Rob pulling out the win.

The CBS region was the only region this round to have all of its top seeds advance. Of course, this was after this region was the first to lose any of its top seeds in the first round when Stewie Griffin beat Walter White. Stewie continued his DOMINATION this round by easily beating Nikita with 85% of the vote, the largest victory from any region this round. Liz Lemon also easily took care of Anna with an 85% win. Almost all of the other winners from this region won with over 70% of the vote as well. The exceptions were the close matchup between Abed Nadir and Jethro Gibbs, and 1 vote difference between Nancy Botwin and Charles Kelly.

Finally, the NBC region got turned upside down just as much as the FOX region when the #2 seed and overall #6 seed, Walter Bishop, easily lost to Troy Barnes,. In addition, the #3 seed and overall #11 seed, Richard Castle, also went down without a fight to Cameron Tucker. In fact, this region had no close matchups with all winners having at least 60% of the vote. Barney Stinson once again had the largest margin of victory from this region with 70%.

So looking at the overall second round voting results, 3 out of 4 animated characters advanced to the third round. In fact, Stewie Griffin has the largest margin of victory of anyone from this round. All 4 characters from 30 Rock advanced and that show is now a perfect 8-0. The Office lost two characters this round but they still have 3 left. Modern Family, Burn Notice, How I Met Your Mother and Community also have 2 characters each left in the tournament. That nearly makes up 50% of field in the third round.

Each of these polls will stay open for one week. Next week the Sweet 16 round begins and we will continue until the final character is crowed as the best some time in May. Remember to tell all of your friends to vote as well!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
