American Idol 2011 – Top 9 Results Episode Review

Reviews, Shows

I’m a big Russell Brand fan, so any episode of American Idol that features him is a pretty good one. But actually, as results shows go tonight’s episode was pretty decent. I barely cringed during the group performance! In fact, the rock medley was probably one of their strongest group numbers thus far. Russell Brand giving the contestants advice on stage presence was also delightful.

I also really dug Constantine Maroulis’s performance. I really enjoyed Constantine during his brief run on Idol back in the day, and I’m glad he’s one of the few Idol alums who’s managed to squeeze a decent career out of the experience without making the final four or so.

I’d forgotten to talk about how Gwen Stefani styled the women for the performance episode this week. Ouch. I have always loved Gwen – I think she has a super cool funky style, I love her music, and No Doubt puts on a hell of an energetic show. But the girls looked like crap on Wednesday night. Lauren in those shorts? They were like a diaper. And Pia is a gorgeous girl, but it’s a rare woman who can rock a jumpsuit like that. Just ask Tyra Banks. The only downer of the night was Iggy Pop. Really, seeing an old man shirtless was not on my bucket list. I mean, “I’m a wild child, baby?” Um, no. You’re a has been, baby. And a senior citizen. And you made Jennifer Lopez very uncomfortable.

When all was said and done, Stefano, Pia and Jacob were in the bottom three. I was surprised by Pia, but not by the boys. Stefano’s days have been numbered for a while, and I think Jacob’s diva ‘tude has alienated him. Or perhaps America just wasn’t ready to look in the mirror. They’re a modest people, you know.

I was hoping Jacob would go home since his performances have worn thin for me and I was peeved by his comments before his performance, but I expected it to be Stefano. So needless to say, I was really freakin’ shocked when Ryan announced that Pia had been eliminated.

Honestly, wow. Did you see that coming? The judges certainly didn’t. I thought J.Lo was about to break out into an ugly cry. I wonder if they regretted using their save on Casey? Not that I’m saying it was a mistake, but Pia was the strongest woman in the competition and had been a frontrunner at one time. I’m really, truly surprised.

This means all four eliminations so far this season have been women. What’s going on? Is it the talent, the voters, or a combination or both? Should the producers limit the calls per household next season to avoid this sort of thing? Or is that just the way life works? Thoughts? Comments? Rants?
