Chuck – Episode 4-20 Recap

Reviews, Shows

Chuck returned on Monday night, and did it ever return with a bang. I’m glad, since technically NBC still has this show on the bubble. Come on NBC, would you just hurry up are renew my favorite shows? Chuck and Parenthood both deserve to get another season. You’ll devote two hours to The Celebrity Apprentice (not that I don’t watch but, come on, that show reeks of summer programming) but you can’t give me two hours for my favorite spy comedy and a family drama that, no joke, I’m more emotionally invested in that my actual family? Come on!

OK. Back to the episode at hand, “Chuck vs. The Family Volkoff”. It was so great to see Timothy Dalton back as Alexi Volkoff, especially now that he’s somewhat reformed. It was also great to see what an evil little minx his daughter has turned into. Will she be a villain for good?

The best part of this episode? It was rich with comedy. From Awesome and Ellie trying to spy on Ellie’s mom, one of the best spies ever, to Alexi’s Oprah-riffic musings on life, to Chuck’s game of Uno to win a weapon back from a pirate, it was all good. There wasn’t a lot of Morgan this week, which is unfortunate, but hopefully he has a good storyline coming up as Alex mans up and tells her mom that Casey is alive.

Bringing the most dangerous man in the world along on a mission certainly provided some excitement, and more than once I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Alexi’s super-intense chess game was a great scene, and I was kept guessing right up until the end if he and Vivian were working together or not.

Meanwhile, we also had a little relationship drama at play. Chuck freaked out a little when Sarah asked him to sign a pre-nup, but after Casey and Morgan told him to play it cool, Sarah was the one freaking out. She decided to rip up the agreement even though Chuck had signed it, and obviously at some point (next week, perhaps?) we’re going to find out exactly why Sarah had wanted it in the first place. Her dad returns next week, so that should be a good one.

There aren’t very many episodes left in this season, but I think we’re set up for a good ride. Ellie lied to Chuck about their dad’s computer, so he didn’t come clean to her about his spy life after all. At some point, the Bartowksis are going to have to work together, and I’m really looking forward to that. It’s been so great to get to see Ellie do something other than worry. Plus we have Chuck and Sarah’s wedding, Casey’s reunion with Alex’s mother, and the whole Vivian Volkoff storyline to wrap up. Which plot are you most excited about? Do you think The Little Spy Show That Could will get a fifth season?

Favorite Lines:

  • “She’s just taking precautions, you know half of all marriages go down?” – Casey
  • Everything with Alexi Volkoff in group therapy, starting with “It’s true. I cut in front of William in the cafeteria line.”
  • Elias: “Pick a game. Dice, roulette, cards. You win, the tracker is yours. I win, you die.”
    Chuck: “Do you have UNO?”
  • “My grandmother always used to say play your cards close to the vest. And wear a coat over the vest, or you’ll look like a jerk.” – Alexi (I guess he wouldn’t care for Mr. Schu?)
