Brothers & Sisters – Episode 5-19 Review

Reviews

In “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” Justin finds out that Brody’s been keeping a huge secret from…okay, I can’t do this. I have to start out this review by saying how fantastic this episode is! Best one of the season by far, and as a bonus, it has a Beach Boys song as its title. Brody’s secret and Michelle’s return bring the intense drama this season has really been lacking.

Since both Kitty and Saul are missing this episode, the only other storyline is Sarah and Luc’s, who of course are fighting again. This time, Sarah goes ahead and put their house up for sale, then cleans Luc’s art studio without asking – a big mistake. He flips out and gives her the cold shoulder throughout his show at a gallery. Finally he admits that he doesn’t want to move, and she takes the house off the market. Yet another Sarah and Luc fight wrapped up nicely by the end of the episode. While I love the characters individually, I can’t say their relationship has been especially interesting. To me it’s just sort of…there.

Speaking of paternity, Justin discovers Brody’s dark secret. Though at first concerned for Brody’s health (a little too concerned in my opinion), he looks at a medical record and learns that Brody lied about his blood type, bring Sarah’s paternity into question again. Meanwhile, Brody asks surprised Nora to live with him during baseball season. Since she’s recently realized she’s in love with him, she agrees. But when Justin reveals that he knows, Brody leaves again, worrying about the unnecessary trouble the truth would cause. Heartbroken, clueless Nora cries to Justin, who reluctantly keeps the secret. (Side note – I have to say how awful Sarah’s shirt was, the one she wore to the gallery. The pattern was so bad, it actually distracted me from the scene. Seriously, who’s in charge of her wardrobe?!)

Anyway, Scotty is surprised when he runs into Michelle, the guys’ surrogate who miscarried. Michelle is clearly troubled and doesn’t want to see her one-time best friend Scotty, who she cut off when she moved to New York. While Scotty wants to help her, reassure her that the guys don’t blame her for what happened, Kevin advises that he let it go when Olivia learns what happened and becomes upset. The family talks it out, agreeing to help Michelle…only to see her getting on an airplane, carrying a baby that could be Kevin and Scotty’s son.

Okay, to be honest, I knew this twist was coming thanks to some spoilers I read. But I’m really curious to see how this storyline ends. Obviously the guys are going to go after Michelle and demand an explanation. But then what? Will they go to court for custody? Will they let Michelle raise their son as a single mom? Or, is the kid even their baby? There are so many possibilities, but unfortunately, only three episodes until the finale!

For some reason, this is my favorite storyline of season five. There’s so many different emotional consequences involved in questioning one of the Walker siblings’ paternity. And considering all of the paternity issue’s this show’s had, it’s a good way to end the series, if this is the last season. I’m not sure if I want Sarah to be de-Walkered, but I’ll enjoy watching the drama unfold.
