The Rock Tops Movie Box Office With Fast Five

News

Some say it’s good to be the king. But I’d counter that with it’s good to be The Rock. The man oozes charisma the way Scott Hall used to ooze machismo. Coming back to WWE TV, minus the few satellite feeds in years past, he helped to boost stagnating ratings on WWE’s A-team show, Monday Night Raw. He was the host of this year’s WrestleMania event, and he’s already been booked in next year’s main event squaring off against a performer that claims he can’t be seen. But John Cena wrestles in denim shorts; he doesn’t wear an invisibility cloak.

This weekend, Dwayne Johnson helped Fast Five become the biggest theatrical release of 2011 thus far. Opening at $83 million, it had no problem finishing first. In fact, the film itself outgrossed the previous #1 openings of the year combined. (Rango opened in March with $38 million and Rio in the early part of April with $39 million).

This is good news for The Rock, since there were talks as early as January that his character in Fast Five could have his own spin-off movie depending on if the film was a hit.
