The Shrek sequels may have gotten worse the more they went on but the one thing that never got old was his Lothario sidekick: Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas). Now, with Shrek concluding its final chapter, the first chapter of a spin off film has a trailer: Puss in Boots, courtesy of USA Today.

The film will be an origin story for the character, exploring how the cat came to be hired as an assassin to kill Shrek before having a change of heart.

“At the beginning, it is more of an homage to Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns and takes place in present day. Then the film flashes back to an orphanage, where Puss in Boots starts a relationship with an … egg,” Banderas says, laughing. And not just an egg, but a rotten one: Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). The other new character of note is Cat burglar Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek).

“She steals my boots,” Banderas says, “and my heart.”

This will mark the fifth film they’ve done together, and did get a day in the recording studio to do some ad-libbing together as they spent most of their days recording dialogue separately. “In Desperado, we improvised a lot. … Salma and I have chemistry we could use in this movie, and we may get something very fresh out of it.”

Puss in Boots is set to hit theaters November 4th, 2011
