Every year right around now fans of Chuck wind up in a little problem. We love the show, we want more of the show, but NBC is always quiet about whether or not it will come back. Ratings have never been phenomenal, and given NBC’s status as a last place network they’re always hoping for a smash hit. So it always seems to be that at the eleventh hour, right as we get ready to say goodbye, that NBC goes ahead and pulls the trigger on another season.
Well, thankfully it’s happened again. It’s being reported that a deal is being finalized to order thirteen episodes for a fifth season. Now I know what you’re thinking, thirteen is nothing! That’s cheap! Well, the last two seasons have both had thirteen episode orders that were then extended (season three wound up with nineteen, season with with twenty-four), so it’s not a far out assumption that this season might see the same sort of extension…especially as they are only twenty-two episodes away from the magic number that leads to syndication.
However, NBC hasn’t exactly been finding success in generating new programming, so Chuck’s return says a lot about their faith in the series. Again. It just goes to show that sometimes a show with a loyal and vocal fanbase does have a place.
Or maybe I’m just giddy that my favorite show isn’t having a series finale this Monday night.
