MSNBC Sports is reporting that Dick Ebersol, who helped bring WWF to prominence in the 1980s with the creation of Saturday Night’s Main Event, has departed NBC Universal.
Ebersol, who held the post of Sports Group President for the NBC Universal family. had been contracted through 2012. The departure caught the company by surprise, according to the report.
Ebersol has been a long time supporter and friend of Vince McMahon and helped the then-WWF to upgrade their production as they expanded nationally. He helped develop Main Event, which was a huge ratings hit for its monthly specials and also helped found the XFL Football League.
Ebersol inducted Bob Uecker into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010.
