Brad Pitt To Possibly Venture To Columbia With The Mission

News, Projects, Rumors

Thanks to Seal Team Six taking out Osama Bin Laden, we see a number of fact-based mission films these next few years. Just like the film Gladiator made sand-and-sandals epics cool again, so could the exploits of Seal Team Six.

Warner Bros. is wanting to move quickly on an upcoming project titled The Mission. Not to be confused with the 1986 release directed by Roland Joffe and starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, this “mission” is based on a six-year mission planned by American and Colombian covert operatives to free fifteen hostages from the Colombian jungle.

The hostages were held by the Colombian guerrilla group FARC, from between six and 15 years. However, the film will not focus on their hardships, and instead will focus on Operacion Jaque, a covert effort involved numerous governments, diplomats and intelligence services and a vast network of spies, military advisers and soldiers plus high-tech surveillance measures.

The studio is wanting Brad Pitt to headline as well as have David O. Russell (The Fighter) to direct. Currently, Pitt is shooting World War Z, and Russell Nobody would confirm that Pitt was at all involved, and I’m not sure he’ll be set but I am convinced they are talking. The studio wants this to happen quickly, and Russell is also considering an adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook with Mark Wahlberg.

What this means? After Russell bowed out of helming a film version of the best-selling PS3 game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, he’s been rumored to direct everything from Maleficent to Cocaine Cowboys. Pitt has never worked with Russell, but there was a time where he was attached to The Fighter when Darren Aronofsky was still attached to direct. He would have played the role that eventually went to Christian Bale. The project will happen, but I have a sneaking suspicion that only one of the parties will be involved. But we’ll see what happens.
