Two Guys Talking About DC Comics To Be Released This Week, 7/13/11 (Detective Comics, War of the Green Lanterns, Batgirl)

Grey Scherl:
AMERICAN VAMPIRE SURVIVAL OT FITTEST #2 (OF 5) (MR)

Grey Scherl:
I wasn’t sure if this was your kind of book or not, Snyder…

Pulse Glazer:
I read this book in trade, but Scott Snyder can do no wrong. This is one of the best books anyone is publishing. And who would have thought… it’s a double cash-in on the vampire fad and Stephen King.

Grey Scherl:
Interesting…

Grey Scherl:
BATGIRL #23

Grey Scherl:
Now this is the best superhero book on the market.

Pulse Glazer:
Well, we have to say goodbye to Cassie. Is this last or second to last?

Grey Scherl:
Steph, and second to last not counting her appearance in Batman Inc next month

Grey Scherl:
This is my favorite book, period, I’m going to miss it like crazy

Pulse Glazer:
Well, as penultimate issues go… want to bring readers up to date on this arc?

Grey Scherl:
For most of her second year (real time) Steph has been dealing with a group she calls the Reapers, and there’s been some awesome stuff that’s come out of it, but with the book wrapping up BQM is going to resolve his plots rather than leave anything hanging.

Pulse Glazer:
I’m still anxious to see what BQM will be writing. With 2 Bat minis out not by him, it appears he’s done with the Bat-verse.

Grey Scherl:
Expect to see more Grey Ghost, and hopefully some character resolution for Proxy who was just beginning her own character arc. From what I’ve heard he’s working on a few television projects.

Pulse Glazer:
That’s nice and all, but…

Grey Scherl:
I also don’t imagine he’s done for good, and part of me is thinking he’s returning alongside Morrison’s Batman Inc. Where Steph will be guest starring next month in the last issue before the relaunch.

Pulse Glazer:
Here’s hoping, but if she returns, it’s hard to imagine she’s recognizable with new Tim seeming so different.

Grey Scherl:
I’ve heard a lot of rumblings about the return of Spoiler, and while everyone is saying Tim is so different….everything I’ve read indicates that he was Robin and now he’s Red Robin, just like Dick was Robin and then Nightwing and then Batman and now Nightwing again. The Bat family doesn’t look too heavily altered, even Babs has them acknowledging that the Killing Joke happened and she was Oracle.

Pulse Glazer:
He seems to have been more like Oracle.

Grey Scherl:
Tim was always the computer guy.

Pulse Glazer:
Yes, but he seems not into action at all by the Sol’s, which could be wrong.

Grey Scherl:
That’s classic Tim, to be honest, he was always the smarter Robin.

Pulse Glazer:
Classic Tim had solo books with a ton of action. This Tim seems like this is his first time seeing action, at least according to Teen Titans solicit.

Grey Scherl:
Well, he’s been Robin for a while so I seriously doubt that’s the case.

Pulse Glazer:
We shall see!
Next!

Grey Scherl:
BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT #3

Grey Scherl:
Why the hell is this book getting picked up in the relaunch?

Pulse Glazer:
My guess is they promised it to Finch.

Grey Scherl:
They should have used him as an artist.

Pulse Glazer:
I know. But he probably wants to write. Is this selling?

Grey Scherl:
I dunno, maybe? Does it come out?

Grey Scherl:
Three issues in how many months?

Pulse Glazer:
Fair point. and it gets billing as a major Bat book.

Grey Scherl:
Flash had a more consistent schedule.

Pulse Glazer:
Sad, but true.

Grey Scherl:
BIRDS OF PREY #14

Grey Scherl:
Gail is off of this book already, which normally would be my way of advocating people skipping it, but it’s Marc Andreyko. And they’re giving him a two parter

Pulse Glazer:
I like Marc more in theory than in practice. I’m dropping it anyway.
Without Oracle, I don’t see the point. I dislike Canary.

Grey Scherl:
I see Dinah, Zinda, and Manhunter on the cover to next months.
Oracle is still in the book.
She just has different jobs.

Pulse Glazer:
Ah, you’re a Manhunter fan.

Grey Scherl:
This solicit is saying Lady Blackhawk, Black Canary, Huntress, and Phantom Lady are teaming up
Billy Tucci on art.

Pulse Glazer:
I think others will like this, but still, it isn’t for me.
I read this book specifically as Gail on Oracle.

Grey Scherl:
It sounds like a fun two issue diversion before the relaunch.

Grey Scherl:
Gail on Babs is why Batgirl wound up on my pull list.
No other reason, just that, I have faith in Gail.
And she’s the definitive writer for Babs in my book.

Pulse Glazer:
I’m sure it’ll be good, but I disprove of the direction and will not support it. I really thought Oracle was important as a handicapped superhero.

Grey Scherl:
BOOSTER GOLD #46 (FLASHPOINT)

Grey Scherl:
Booster Gold vs Doomsday….CAR DOORS!

Pulse Glazer:
No thanks. Booster’s only recourse when faced with Doomsday should be RUN.

Grey Scherl:
I think that is his plan, but it’s fun to yell out CAR DOORS when referring to Booster.
The new super powered Greek interests me too as she might be that mystery JLI member.

Pulse Glazer:
I thought that mystery member was wiped from existence?

Grey Scherl:
You mean Donna? It could be, but at the same time all we really know is white skin and black hair, Donna was just an educated guess.

Pulse Glazer:
Ah DC, still making your women distinct.

Grey Scherl:
DETECTIVE COMICS #879

Grey Scherl:
This James Jr. stuff has been creeping me out.

Pulse Glazer:
It’s been fantastic, especially with last issue’s reveal that we shouldn’t spoil and I actually didn’t see coming.

Grey Scherl:
I didn’t at all, but Snyder really did tackle one of the biggest untouched mysteries of Batman by bringing back Jim Gordon’s son.

Pulse Glazer:
I wish Snyder was staying on Dick Grayson. Or Tomasi was.

Grey Scherl:
I completely agree, if not just because Dick can totally handle two solo books without issue and he proved that over the last year.

Pulse Glazer:
And these guys just nail him as a character. Grant, as good as Batman and Robin was, totally focused more on Damian. Snyder and Tomasi have Dick’s character down.

Grey Scherl:
I agree.

Grey Scherl:
FLASHPOINT CITIZEN COLD #2 (OF 3)

Grey Scherl:
I loved the first issue so I’m expecting to enjoy this one, too.

Pulse Glazer:
I love Captain Cold. Who’s writing?

Grey Scherl:
Kolins is writing and drawing it.
Wally West is in it.

Pulse Glazer:
Hey, wow, Wally exists.

Grey Scherl:
He’s Iris’s cameraman. Sigh.

Grey Scherl:
FLASHPOINT DEATHSTROKE THE CURSE OF RAVAGER #2 (OF 3)

Grey Scherl:
This book is insanely fun.

Grey Scherl:
Pirate Deathstroke actually works.

Pulse Glazer:
Pirate anything usually works.

Grey Scherl:
His arch enemy in the first issue was Warlord, who was also a pirate.

Pulse Glazer:
Warlord is also awesome and should be a pirate from now on.

Grey Scherl:
You know what, that would probably be an easier sell than Swords and Sorcery.

Pulse Glazer:
I know. Pirates are awesome but somehow underexposed.

Grey Scherl:
Stupid Vampires.

Grey Scherl:
FLASHPOINT EMPEROR AQUAMAN #2 (OF 3)

Grey Scherl:
The first issue was a flashback issue that showed us how Europe was sunk, and this issue appears to show us the death of Mera.

Pulse Glazer:
I’m still not sure I’m getting the relaunch of Aquaman with Johns, and I’m just not caring about this.

Grey Scherl:
Tony Bedard is writing it, and the first issue was really solid, flashbacks may well be the way to go as it lets them actually characterize this version of Arthur; As for the relaunch….I’m in, if it’s good, great, if not, oh well.

Grey Scherl:
FLASHPOINT FRANKENSTEIN CREATURES OF UNKNOWN #2 (OF 3)

Grey Scherl:
The first issue wasn’t bad, and I imagine that the relaunch will be more or less the same style, but it’s not for me.

Pulse Glazer:
I’m getting the relaunch for a bit. I like Morrison’s Franky. Only 7 Soldier I did like.

Grey Scherl:
He was the one I liked the least, Manhattan Guardian and Bulleteer were my favorites

Pulse Glazer:
I didn’t hate MG, but Bulleteer wasn’t for me at all.

Grey Scherl:
Mr. Miracle was more fun to go back and read after Final Crisis.

Pulse Glazer:
Fair, I never tried.

Grey Scherl:
GREEN LANTERN #67 (WAR OF GL)

Grey Scherl:
Was there a delay or did it just feel like a delay? Either way, YAY!

Pulse Glazer:
Is this the end?

Grey Scherl:
Last issue of the War and of this run of the series.
Also, since it’s tied in.

Grey Scherl:
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #61 (WAR OF GL)

Grey Scherl:
GLC, on the other hand, has two more issues left after this one

Grey Scherl:
The War is over, Green wins, and while they’re saying that someone dies…all four Earth born GL’s are accounted for come September.

Pulse Glazer:
Mogo died. That doesn’t count?

Grey Scherl:
They kept saying it was one of our Earth 4.

Pulse Glazer:
Please let it be John.

Grey Scherl:
John and Guy are the leads of GLC come September..hell John is on the cover to two of the last three issues of GLC, with Kyle on the final one with Sora

Pulse Glazer:
I know. But they can still kill John or Guy and just change the solicits.

Grey Scherl:
RED ROBIN #25

Pulse Glazer:
Do we get a wrap for the Anarky subplot? I really hope not.

Grey Scherl:
Second to last issue, Red Robin vs. Blackbat!
Seriously, Tim vs. Cassandra Cain is always money.

Pulse Glazer:
True there. Cassy is money.

Grey Scherl:
So long as she isn’t a lead character, then it just doesn’t sell

Grey Scherl:
SUPERMAN #713

Grey Scherl:
Superman in Portland deciding he doesn’t want to be Superman anymore….next.

Pulse Glazer:
Oh man. Thank god this is over. What’s next.

Grey Scherl:
TEEN TITANS #97

Grey Scherl:
Krul had been doing a nice job on this book, but it’s being wiped out hardcore.

Pulse Glazer:
As I haven’t enjoyed this, I’m okay with that.

Grey Scherl:
It’s not as easy to care when he’s trying to debut a new character and up their profile and then you find out that this is one of the few full on reboots.
Sorry Solstice, we hardly knew ye.

Pulse Glazer:
Fair point.

Pulse Glazer:
One last thing – 1 must-buy for the week from DC?

Grey Scherl:
Ooooh, this is tough.
GL is the obvious big name top seller for this week, what with it being the end of the War of the GLs
but Batgirl will be the best book this week.

Pulse Glazer:
I’m going to go with Detective Comics. Everyone is so busy with Grant Morrison, no one is noticing just how amazing Snyder’s run has been. Reminds me of everyone sleeping on the Brubaker run. Get this.

Grey Scherl:
There you have it folks, it’s a good week to read DC Comics!
