Afro-Samurai battles his way to the Big Screen

It is being reporting that Samuel L. Jackson is teaming Indomina Group and Gonzo Studios to produce a live action feature film adaptation Afro Samurai, the animated series in which Jackson himself voices the leader character.

The original anime TV mini-series aired in 2007 and was followed by an animated TV movie Afro Samurai: Resurrection.

“This has been one of my very favorite properties ever since our amazing debut at Comic-Con with the original series pilot out of Japan,” said Jackson.

the plan to find a writer and director this summer and complete casting by the end of the year. The film will be shot at Pinewood Indomina Studios in the Dominican Republic next year.

Afro Samurai was created by Takashi Okazaki and was originally published between 1999 and 2000. The main story follows the title hero across the landscape of a futuristic feudal Japan as he seeks to avenge his father’s death by a gunslinger named Justice.

While Jackson provided the voice for the hero in animation form, there is no word yet if he’ll reprise his role in live action form. Frankly, as much as I love Jackson, I think he might be a little too old for the role now. However, if were to play Rokutaro, the hero’s father, I think that would be pretty damn cool.
