Food Network Star – Episode 7-8 Review

Reviews, Shows

The top six were faced with their biggest challenge yet – cooking on Rachael Ray’s morning talk show. But before that, they had to prepare signature cupcakes for Ina Garten.

Surprisingly, the camera challenge presentations didn’t suck this week. Sure, some dishes were better than others, but for the most part no one embarrassed themselves. My two favorite parts were after the cameras stopped rolling though. Mary Beth’s fake faint when Bobby complimented her strawberry cupcake was actually funny; likewise Susie was especially charming and bubbly. Whitney came across as a little bit of a brown-noser, but it was interesting to learn that she idolizes Ina. It almost makes her more relatable.

But then, everyone had their problems on Rachael Ray, where they had to demo comfort food-turned-elegant dishes while they answered a question from an audience member. Jeff did the best, winning over the audience, Rachael and the judges with his big personality, and Whitney excelled also. The others didn’t do too well, though I have to say I really want to try Vic’s fried lasagna dish.

Because she couldn’t be natural on camera, Jyll was sent home this week. Which was a relief since I worried it would be Mary Beth, but too be honest I’m sort of losing interest at this point in the competition. I really doubt I’d watch any of the contestant’s winning shows, so to me it doesn’t matter as much who wins.

Top Three

Jeff: He did great on the Rachael Ray challenge, but he’s still a wild card. As long as he keeps up the good presentations, and doesn’t really mess up a dish, he might make top two.

Vic: He didn’t do so well this week, but I don’t see him going before Whitney, Mary Beth, or even Susie. The judges like him too much to send him home.

Susie: She needs to maintain her bubbly enthusiasm on camera. If she makes one wrong move, Whitney could take her top-three place.

Most Likely Not Top Three

Whitney: The most unpredictable contestant left. She’s been doing her best to be more personable on camera, but it could be too late to save her. Especially if the others are on their game.

Mary Beth: She’s my favorite contestant left, but based on the unflattering commercial, I’d say she’s toast next week. Her personality and food isn’t as impressive as the other four.
