Spoiler Warnings: Meet The New Ultimate Spider-Man

News, Spoilers, Top Story

For some reason I’m not surprised that I’m reporting this spoiler on a Monday night/Tuesday morning. I didn’t get an early copy of the book, or a press release, or anything like that. I just read USA Today‘s website and saw that Marvel sold another spoiler out to the media to bolster sales. Seriously, this thing broke at midnight Tuesday morning by my midwestern clock. But you’re not here to hear my rant, you’re here for the spoiler!

Meet Miles Morales, a half-black, half-hispanic teenager that just happens to be the new Ultimate Spider-Man. He has an as of yet unrevealed connection to Peter Parker, and will be interacting with Peter’s supporting cast as he takes his own journey towards becoming a superhero.

“The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility,” says writer Brian Michael Bendis. “He’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.”

Marvel’s Editor in Chief Axel Alonso added “What you have is a Spider-Man for the 21st century who’s reflective of our culture and diversity. We think that readers will fall in love with Miles Morales the same way they fell in love with Peter Parker.”

The reveal comes in this weeks Ultimate Fallout #4, written by Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, and Nick Spencer. Both Ultimate Fallout and the impending Ultimate Spider-Man relaunch are both day and date releases for digital.

Grey’s Thoughts: You know what, go big or go home. If you’re going to kill off Peter Parker and replace him with someone new, you should reinvent the wheel. I’m far more interested in this with the new kid being Spidey than had it been some established character wearing his clothes.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 will be on sale 9/7/11 and will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Sara Pichelli.

A lifelong reader and self proclaimed continuity guru, Grey is the Editor in Chief of Comics Nexus. Known for his love of Booster Gold, Spider-Girl (the real one), Stephanie Brown, and The Boys. Don't miss The Gold Standard.
