Two Guys Talking About Comics: The X-Men Relaunch Part 2, Gold Teams

Columns, Top Story

AARON GLAZER:
It’s time to review the Gold Team members, or at least try and figure out who the heck they are.  Let’s begin with the big new book…Wolverine and the X-Men by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo!

GREY SCHERL:
If you haven’t yet, go check out our look at the Blue Teams from the other day.
I could take or leave Jason Aaron after Schism, but Chris Bachalo? YES PLEASE!
Bachalo is one of my all time favorite X artists.

AARON GLAZER:
Ha, I like Aaron more than you do, but Schism doesn’t make me eager for this.  Bachalo is quite good.

GREY SCHERL:
Hey, if Schism were better I’d sing his praises, but it’s 12 year old sociopaths that can beat up the X-Men, so I don’t.

AARON GLAZER:
Right, understood.  Well, who’s on the team?

GREY SCHERL:
Iceman is clear as day.
Right behind Wolverine.

AARON GLAZER:
The character in the background has to be Marvel Girl, right?

GREY SCHERL:
Her or Storm, the hair is longer than I’m use to with Rachel.

GREY SCHERL:
And the Phoenix effect is trying to throw us off, much like how we assumed the guy on the left to be Havok based on the circles.

AARON GLAZER:
Kitty Pryde is in the front with Logan, right?

GREY SCHERL:
His claws are vanishing into her, which must be painful since she hates phasing through adamantium, but the fact that they seem to be going into someone instead of behind them is the giveaway.
This means that she’d be sticking with Logan over Scott, which makes sense, and that she’d leave Colossus now that he’s evil….which also makes sense.

AARON GLAZER:
Right.  I’m better with that than with Rachel going with Logan.

GREY SCHERL:
Is it just me of does the guy we thought was Havok seem to have a tail?

AARON GLAZER:
I don’t think so, but I’ve heard that elsewhere.
Isn’t the tail someone else around there?

GREY SCHERL:
There’s at least one person between Iceman and Kitty, but I’m going to guess the artist formerly known as Havok is Cannonball.

AARON GLAZER:
That’d be cool and makes the most sense since he dissapeared from New Mutants.

GREY SCHERL:
He and Logan have worked together in the past too, they were on the same team during Sam’s brief tenure on the X-Men.

AARON GLAZER:
I’ve heard speculation that Nocturne will be on this team.

GREY SCHERL:
Also, if Idie is not dead, she is the figure between Iceman and Kitty.
Nocturne is long gone.

AARON GLAZER:
They bring people back semi-regularly, no?

GREY SCHERL:
She left 616 a few years ago to go back to a different Earth and live happily ever after with Thunderbird from Exiles.

AARON GLAZER:
Nice.

GREY SCHERL:
Yeah, they sort of put her in the spot of “Make sure they can’t come back”, though you can argue that when Claremont started giving her strokes that was the case.

AARON GLAZER:
Sheez.  Moving on to Mike Carey’s X-Men Legacy

GREY SCHERL:
I’ve really liked this book, and I’m kinda sad that this is Carey’s last arc.

AARON GLAZER:
I’ve never really liked it and am very curious who’s next.  I’m a Carey fan, but he focussed entirely on folks I don’t like.

GREY SCHERL:
I thought that would be my issue too, but I like Rogue now more than I ever have because of him.
Also, the figure on the left, Gambit, I was never one of his fans before this book either.

AARON GLAZER:
Gambit is terrible.
as is Legion.

GREY SCHERL:
See, I wouldn’t argue with you if not for this book, but Carey has legitimately made me care about both.
Frenzy too, over on the right.

AARON GLAZER:
Right, I see that.

GREY SCHERL:
Legion is over next to Gambit.
For the readers sake.
The mystery person is the person behind Rogue.

AARON GLAZER:
Mr. Sinister is due to return.  Could that be Ms.  Sinister?

AARON GLAZER:
If not, Storm or Marvel Girl – whichever isn’t on Logan’s team seems likely.

GREY SCHERL:
I don’t see it, I mean, the cape is there, but I can’t fathom her on the team.
I really think it’s AoA Rogue.

AARON GLAZER:
I can dig that.

GREY SCHERL:
It would be interesting, Rogue playing off a completely different version of herself with Gambit in the middle.

AARON GLAZER:
I guess it could work.
From here we have Rick Remender and Robbi Rodriguez on Uncanny X-Force.  Looks like Logan is replaced with Age fo Apocalypse Nightcrawler, which is awesome.

GREY SCHERL:
Incredibly awesome.
This team looks like it’s going to be going through the fewest changes, as we can clearly make out Psylocke, Deadpool, and Fantomex.

AARON GLAZER:
Well, that’s fine by me.  No Archangel, but we thought we saw him a few days back.
Wow, the Gold teams are going quickly.  This book has been and remains a must-read.

GREY SCHERL:
You thought you saw him, I think he’s evil.

AARON GLAZER:
Fair enough.  Finally, we have X-Factor, which you’d apparently have to pry from Peter David’s cold, dead hands.

GREY SCHERL:
I am happy with that fact.
PAD’s been gold on this.

AARON GLAZER:
Havok being back is very cool.
Who else is on the team?

GREY SCHERL:
Strong Guy is standing out clearly.
Wolfsbane is on his shoulder.

AARON GLAZER:
You’d think she would be busy with her newborn.

GREY SCHERL:
You would, but she doesn’t have the baby, someone else does.

AARON GLAZER:
Ah, well then.  No Madrox?

GREY SCHERL:
unless he’s the one in the right corner

AARON GLAZER:
That wouldn’t be much of a roster shakeup… I see Siryn, too.

GREY SCHERL:
M is down below, possibly Shatterstar too.

AARON GLAZER:
I’ve never liked those two.

GREY SCHERL:
I have
90’s are win.

AARON GLAZER:
If you say so.

GREY SCHERL:
I think Polaris is one of the mystery women on Gold Team.

AARON GLAZER:
That’d make sense.
Another character I don’t have much use for.

GREY SCHERL:
She might be the one on Wolverine and the X-Men.
You don’t read enough X then, this is the good stuff.
90’s!

AARON GLAZER:
Were hit or miss for the X-Titles.

GREY SCHERL:
Gold Team is 4/4 for me.

AARON GLAZER:
Sounds good to me!
Goodnight everybody!
