Gojira getting Criterion release?

Disc Announcements, News, Rumors

A couple days ago Criterion posted the above image of a Toho film canister on their Facebook page. This image seems to be hinting at a future release of the 1954 Japanese monster classic Gojira.

The film, directed by Ishiro Honda, which began the long series of Godzilla monster movies and spin-offs, was originally released on Blu-ray in 2009 courtesy of Classic Media, but that edition did not receive a full restoration.

Gojira is also known as Godzilla, King of the Monsters, which is a re-edited North American version of the film which included add footage of Raymond Burr.

The lone image leaves many questions unanswered since Criterion has yet to make any official announcement. Questions popping up now include: When will it be released? What versions of the film will be included? Will it be released on DVD and/or Blu-Ray? And what special features can we expect to see?
