The O’Really Report – Same Raw Place, New Raw Face

Columns, Top Story

Welcome to the Tantalizingly Triumphant Tuesday Typing of everything wrestling in The O’Really Report!  I am your host Rhett Davis and The O’Really Report is now a Tuesday feature.  Well after an eventful Raw, I know what is on everyone’s mind… how in the world will Eve react to The Bella Twins?  I kid, but I’m sure the main story that will be circulated this week is the match announced between Triple H and CM Punk.  So in light of this, I will not be discussing that subject.  I will instead debate the real story as of yesterday.

The Departure of the Brand Extension

That’s right!  In a throw-away, barely-mentioned line Triple H dismissed the Brand Extension claiming that Raw superstars can appear on SmackDown freely and Raw guys can appear on SmackDown.  This eliminates the brand exclusiveness of the superstars and makes the big question what will happen next?  Will the Heavyweight titles be combined?  Will the mid-card titles be combined?  What will happen to the stars who barely got time with the brand extension?  Guys like The Great Khali, The Usos, Drew McIntyre, Tyson Kidd, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Curt Hawkins, and Ezekiel Jackson will have even less time on TV with the double dosage of Orton and Cena.  Will there be another round of firings to rid of some of the talent that is floating around?  Plus the WWE loses its big Draft Supershow with every week being a Supershow now.  I mean technically they could have it, but Raw and SmackDown are practically the same now.  Some may believe that there will be more attention to the lesser titles, but I digress.  I think there will be even less time as they now have the opportunity to push the heavyweight feuds twice a week instead of just once.  That’s right!  Now we get to see Cena and Orton vs Christian and Alberto Del Rio on Raw and then John Cena vs Christian and Randy Orton vs Alberto Del Rio on SmackDown every week!  Aren’t you excited?

My major problem with the disappearance of the brand extension is how it came across.  That should’ve been a big deal!  I mean, now when you go to a show you don’t know who you will see!  You could see any star from Raw or SmackDown!  The surprise should’ve been put over!  Instead, we get a half-assed, barely-noted comment from Triple H before he continues with ‘more important matters’ like Nash lying to him.  What should’ve happened is that Triple H should’ve enacted this when he became the COO as a way of him ‘changing things’.  And if they just came up with it, then they should’ve had the rosters converging so much that Triple H sees it as a revolt and combines the shows in order to create some sort of peace.  I just wish there had been some reasoning behind it.  The big thing with Vince McMahon when he was the head cheese was that big announcements like that would’ve had hype.  Vince wouldn’t have just waddled out there and said it as a throw-away line.

So many questions have come about from this brand extension being demolished.  Only time will tell what will truly unfold from ramifications of combining the shows.  I hope the heavyweight titles are not combined as guys who aren’t the fold like Cena, Orton, or Triple H can get into the heavyweight scene.  I think the lesser titles will be used even less now that the shows are combined.  Do you see the United States or Intercontinental Championship getting any more time now that there is less time for them to receive pushing?

So many questions, I just hope WWE is doing this for the better.

And quite frankly my dear… that’s a wrap!
