Wednesday Comments – The DC Comics Relaunch Is Upon Us

Columns, Top Story

Ok, so as I type this, I’m sure some reviews of the first batch of DCnU titles are hitting the net thanks to comic shops opening at midnight. It’s an exciting time to be a comic fan.

But I’ve got to be realistic about things. While I’ll be picking up a complete set of the new #1’s, I’m sure that some of the books just won’t click with me. While I read a variety of different titles, not everything is going to suit my fancy. There are books that I know I’m going to pick up based either on creative teams or character loyalty. There are the books that I’m going to try out expecting to like. There are also books that I’m just going to try out, which means I’ll be unbiased. And there are books that are going to have to battle to stay on my pull list.

Pulling Regardless

Action Comics – C’mon, you’ve got Rags and Morrison on Superman.

Batwing – I like the creative team and I really want a book featuring a Black male lead to succeed.

Detective Comics – I’ve been reading ‘Tec for years. Why stop now?

Static Shock – I’m a fan of the Milestone Universe and the character. I really want this book to do well.

Batman & Robin – I love Damian. The fact that it’s Tomasi and Gleason is just icing on the cake.

Batwoman – I’ve literally been waiting years for this book. I love the character and the creative talent.

Green Lantern – C’mon, this is a no brainer. I’m a huge GL fan.

Mister Terrific – I’m very interested in seeing how Michael Holt fits into things. And again, I really want to support books featuring Black male leads.

Red Lanterns – Just chalk this up to my love for G.L. And having Milligan write things is equally cool.

Resurrection Man – Mitch written by DnA? It’s like a dream come true.

Batman – I love Bats. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Scott Snyder has up his sleeve.

Blue Beetle – I’m so happy that Jaime has a book again. I really hope this book thrives.

Green Lantern Corps – I love G.L.

Nightwing – As much as I enjoyed Dick’s time as Batman, I’m really looking forward to seeing him return to being Nightwing.

Wonder Woman – Chiang and Azzarello together again. What’s not to love?

Aquaman – I really enjoy Ivan Reis’ artwork. I’ve picked up pretty much every Aquaman series for the past two decades, so I’m in for this one too.

The Flash – While I love Wally West, I’m going to continue to support The Flash.

New Guardians – Have I mentioned how much I love G.L.

Superman – I’m looking forward to seeing George Perez back on Superman.

Biased Towards

Batgirl – I don’t know how I feel about Babs walking again, but I trust Simone.

Hawk & Dove – I loved Hawk & Dove’s mini from the 80’s. I’m sort of looking forward to seeing Liefeld’s return to the duo.

Justice League International – I very interested in seeing where this book goes.

Stormwatch – This book has me intrigued. Seeing how Wildstorm folds into the DCnU is one of the things I’m eager to find out about.

Demon Knights – I’m not big on swords and sorcery, but I like seeing the past of the DCU.

Legion Lost – I’m a huge Legion fan, so seeing them in the past/present should be a real treat.

Catwoman – I like Judd and like Selina. But I still miss Will Pfeifer.

Legion of Super-Heroes – While I wasn’t the biggest fan of Levitz’s return to the Legion, I’m hoping that this book finds it’s stride.

Red Hood and the Outlaws – I love Jason Todd. I really hope this book rocks.

Batman: The Dark Knight – This is my least favorite Bat title, but it’s still a Bat title. And the whole Jim Gordon subplot was very interesting.

Fury of Firestorm – Again, I trust Gail. But I’m not the biggest fan of Ronnie.

Teen Titans – I’m a fan of Bart Allen and this is the book to find him.

Unbiased

Animal Man
Swamp Thing
Grifter
Suicide Squad
Superboy
Birds of Prey
Captain Atom
DC Universe Presents
Supergirl
All-Star Western
I, Vampire
Justice League Dark
Voodoo

Biased Against

Green Arrow – I didn’t really enjoy the most recent Green Arrow title, so this book has some hurdles to overcome.

Men of War – I’m not really a fan of war books. I don’t really see this book staying on my list for long.

O.M.A.C. – Um, DiDio writing a book? This won’t be pretty.

Deathstroke – I’m not the biggest Slade Wilson fan, so I don’t know if I’ll be reading this book for long.

Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. – While I love Alberto Ponticelli as an artist, I don’t really know if I’m going to enjoy the story.

Blackhawks – Again, this is a war book and they just don’t do much for me.

The Savage Hawkman – For the most part I didn’t enjoy Tony Daniel’s run on Batman, so I don’t have high hopes for this book.

So yeah, that’s my take on the DC Universe Relaunch titles. Rest assured that you’ll get my thoughts on the first wave of books next week.
