BOX OFFICE: Contagion Infects The Help On Its Way To Top Spot

News

For three straight weekends The Help has managed to reside in the same spot at the box office. First place. However, it looks like that streak will end as early returns suggest that Warner Bros.’ Contagion is on track to finish north of $20 million for the weekend. Helping the cause is its all-star cast which consists of Oscar winners Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cottilard, and Kate Winslet, plus Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne. Friday estimates have it finishing with $8 million.

As for The Help, it looks to finish with a solid $10 million. Not a bad number at all considering the film has been in release for five weeks. Its domestic tally currently sits at $128 million.

The other big new release of the weekend, the MMA drama Warrior, which had a public preview screening on Sunday, unfortunately looks to tap out to both Steven Soderbergh’s thriller and the easy to swallow racial dramedy. But the good news is that its 84% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes could carry it for the next few weeks if word of mouth is strong.

Circling the drain for viewership this weekend is the comedy Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star starring Nick Swardson in his first (and most likely last) lead role and the horror creature feature appropriately titled Creature.
