Hello everybody, Scott Sawitz here bringing you live play by play action for Ultimate Fight Night 25. The fights are scheduled live on Spike TV and the televised portion will feature these bouts:

Welcome ladies and gentlemen, right now the Facebook prelims are currently going on live. To view them and read along you can click “like” on Facebook to the UFC and watch them directly there.

Welterweight bout: Justin Edwards vs. Jorge Lopez

Edwards is recently from “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 13, where he was on Team Junior Dos Santos. Lopez is a protege of Pride/UFC veteran Wanderlai “The Axe Murderer” Silva. Edwards is coming off a split decision loss to TUF Season 13 Alum Clay Harvison while Lopez makes his UFC debut.

Round 1: Both come out firing and Lopez goes into the clinch. Both go for the takedown but Lopez back him up against cage. Lopez with the slam but Edwards has a tight guillotine locked in. Edwards rolls out and gets a front choke, releases it and goes back standing.

Brief exchange and Edwards goes for the double, can’t bring him down. Big knee from Lopez to the head and Edwards back him into the cage. Brings him down with a double leg but Lopez quickly gets back up. Still has control against the cage and they repeat but with Edwards holding the neck. Backs off and goes into a bit of an exchange, but goes for the double and Lopez getting back up again.

Edwards lets him up and they’re back on the feet.

Brief exchange that Lopez gets the better of. Edwards is controlling the cage, Lopez backing up on his heels. Edwards goes for the takedown but eats a big knee, scramble and his back is against the cage. Throws a couple knees but doesn’t connect strongly. Scramble and Edwards miffs on the double and Lopez backs him into the cage. Edwards reverses and goes for the double, Lopez defending well. Lopez makes him eat a knee for it and Edwards goes for the double, can’t connect.

Round score: 10-9 Edwards

Round 2: Edwards is controlling the middle of the cage again but Lopez is countering well. Spinning back kick gets to the mid-section. Edwards gets him against the cage and goes for the double, connecting and getting into side control against the cage. Looks to be going for a choke but Lopez is defending well. Edwards has a tight guillotine but sacrifices position and loses it, ending up in Lopez’s guard. Lopez lets him up.

Lopez connects with a big looping right but doesn’t connect, winds up in the clinch with Edwards against the cage. They switch spots as Edwards looks for the double again. Gets him down with it and gets his back, looking to set up for a rear naked choke.

Edwards makes Lopez eats some punches and is trying to stretch him out, looking to get him to open up. Nice spinning switch and Lopez scrambles back up, clinching with Edwards against the cage. Referee break.

Edwards is the aggressor, throwing but not connecting strongly. Edwards winds up back in the clinch against the cage. Round ends with two in that position.

Round Score: 10-9 Edwards, 20-18 Edwards

Round 3: Edwards and Lopez exchange lightly and wind up in the clinch, Edwards against the wall. Lopez with the double and Edwards looking for a Kimura. Lopez in side control wrapped around Lopez’s inner leg. Kimura lost and Lopez gets in the mount. Gets the back, flattens him out and unloads with about a dozen punches. Edwards spins out but can’t get away, Lopez in side control. Edwards eats some short elbows and moves to north/south.

Edwards is holding on to Lopez’s neck, trying to set up for the Kimura, gets the scramble and Lopez is back on his feet with Edwards’ back against the cage. Lopez with the trip and into guard. Edwards has butterfly guard and then loses it to a close guard. Lopez with some ground and pound.

Edwards rolls for an armbar and spins for a knee bar. Locks in an omaplata and it’s in tight but doesn’t it tight enough as Lopez escapes. Has a triangle as the fight ends.

Featherweight bout: Mike Lullo vs. Robert Peralta

Lullo is coming off a loss to Edson Barboza, Peralta is making his debut and is coming off a split decision victory over Dream Featherweight Champion Hiroyuki Takaya. Lullos is from and fights out of the northern suburbs of Illinois near where I live, oddly enough.

Round 1: Both come out swinging, exchange kicks to the lower leg. Really crisp striking from the two but nothing connected. Peralta is circling, goes for a double but winds up in the clinch. Peralta makes him eat a couple knees and punches to the body, winding up on top of Lullo in the butterfly guard. Peralta backs off and lets him up.

Lullo throws a couple weak leg kicks and Peralta connects to the left thigh again. Lullo is winning the position game but is not landing all that much. Peralta is hitting him hard with those low leg kicks as his left leg is remarkably bruised up already.

Lullo hits him a couple times with leg kicks but not very strong. Peralta throws a nice combination but doesn’t connect. Peralta is making him eat leg kicks and is setting up some good combinations with them. Lullo is throwing a lead and a jab regularly but not connecting, and Peralta is connecting with that leg regularly. Peralta is starting to tee off and connects with a sidekick to the midsection and the two exchange knees in the clinch.

Round Score: 10-9 Peralta

Round 2: Peralta is keeping his distance and peppering him with lower kicks to that wounded leg . Lullo goes for the clinch but Peralta backs off, looking for some more leg kicks.

Lullo goes for the takedown but can’t finish, winding up with Peralta against the cage. Peralta spins him and throws some strikes to that leg. Lullo goes for the trip and then a single leg but can’t get either takedown with Peralta against the cage. Lullo backs off but eats a couple punches for his efforts.

Peralta check’s Lullo’s kicks and Peralta peppers him to the same leg. Lullo’s double leg is telegraphed and from far out, Peralta with an easy sprawl and defense. Lullo presses him to the cage and is going for the takedown again but Peralta defends well. Lullo backs off but eats another strong punch from Peralta.

Round Score: Peralta 10-9, Peralta leads fight 20-18

Round 3: Lullo comes out but Peralta makes him eat a combination for his efforts. Lullo goes for the takedown and presses him against the cage but can’t finish. Peralta is really defending well by using his body position and forcing him to use his wounded leg as the power behind the takedowns.

Another takedown that can’t connect against the cage, Peralta content to stand there for a bit. Peralta spins out and lands a knee to the cage. Wide combination and head kick don’t connect from Peralta. Lullo with a solid leg kick but eats another combination from Peralta, goes for a double leg that gets stuff. Peralta presses him against the cage and Lullo spins away, then pushes Peralta back into it.

Lullo finally gets the takedown and Peralta’s back is against the fence. He wall walks back up and Lullo gets a hook in, Peralta defending well with hand control. Peralta spins away but eats an elbow. Lullo gets the takedown and has Peralta against the cage. Round ends with the two against it.

Welterweight bout: TJ Waldburger vs. Mike Stumpf

TJ is coming off a loss to Johnny Hendricks by TKO. Stumpf is making his UFC debut.

Round 1 Waldburger transitions to back off a kick and Stumpf has his back mounted early on. Loses the hooks and gets his left in, and after Stupmpf tries to stand up TJ smoothly gets the other one in. Flattens him out but Stumpf gets back to his knees. Stumpf uses hand control, Waldburger goes for an amrbar. Stumpf escapes and a scramble winds up with Stumpf against the cage.

TJ with the trip and winds up in half guard. Stumpf sneaks out and throws a knee. Goes for a guillotine and can’t lock it in, TJ gets side control and steps into an armbar. Locked in and switches to a triangle as Stumpf defends well. TJ with some beautiful transitions and locks in a perfect (and deep) triangle. Stumpf taps at 3:52 of the first round.

Welterweight bout: Clay Harvison vs. Seth Baczynski

Harvison was a member of Team Lesnar on Season 13 of TUF. He’s coming off a victory over Justin Edwards by Split Decision. Seth Baczynski is on a two fight win streak since being cut from the UFC after a loss to Brad Tavares; Seth was on Season 11 of TUF.

Round 1: Lots of circling to start. Harvison goes for the leg kick and eats some punches from Seth. Seth is using his range to keep Harvison on his heels and they trade punches. Set is stalking him down and lands some strikes, then locks in the clinch with Harvison against the cage. He locks in the plum and lands some knees, loses it and hits a flying knee before another clinch and knees.

Seth is taking him apart with the knees. Harvison’s face is bruised up and Seth lands in the clinch against the cage. Harvison is recognizing when the clinch is coming and is back off fairly well. Locks in the clinch and knees him against the cage. Seth hurts Harvison with a right and misses a flying knee, then lands an overhead left. He’s really pushing the pace and is looking for a big knockout with his knees or feet. Goes for the double and can’t finish, lets go as Harvison goes for a guillotine.

Seth has found range and tags him twice, then hits a front kick. Gets into the clinch on the cage with a couple of strong knees to the body. Goes for the high crotch single and can’t finish, round ends with Harvison connecting.

Round Score: 10-9 Seth

Round 2: Some striking exchanges wind up with Seth on top after a massive left hook, Seth unloading onto Harvison from a postured position. Harvison gives up his back, Seth stretches him out with both hooks but winds up on his back. Harvison gives up back and Harvison locks in the rear naked choke. Harvison taps by RNC.

Official Decision: Seth Baczynski by submission (Rear naked choke) at 1:12 of round 2.


Bantamweight bout: Ken Stone vs. Donny Walker

Stone is coming off a loss to Scott Jorgensen and Walker a decision loss to Jeff Hougland.

Round 1: Stone with a couple strong kicks early on to the leg of Walker. Gets double underhooks and presses Walker into the cage. Finishes it up after a short time against the cage, lands in half guard. He’s got strong head/arm control and Walker is shrimping into him. Stone is throwing some good body shots, Walker gives up his back in attempt to get up. Walker drags him down and locks in the hooks. Stone is using hand control but gives up back control. Stone has a deep rear naked choke in and gets him on his back, really deep. Ref stops it at 2:40 of the first as Walker refuses to tap.

Official Decision: Ken Stone by submission (rear naked choke) at 2:40 of the first round.


Welterweight bout: Matt Riddle vs. Lance Benoist

Riddle is coming off a decision loss to Sean Pierson after a TKO victory over DaMarques Johnson. Benoist is making his UFC debut.

Round 1: They exchange early and Benoist connects with a big straight, goes for the takedown and can’t get it. Scramble and he connects with another big shot. Throws a hook kick and can’t connect, clinch winds up with Riddle pressing him Benoist against the cage. Both throw knees and Riddle took a big shot to the groin. Referee stops it to let Riddle recover.

Riddle throws wild and hits a head kick. Benoist connects but Riddle gets the takedown, who locks in full guard. Moves into mission control of the rubber guard with Riddle tight. Goes back to full guard and Riddle presses him along the cage. Eats a big elbow and Riddle looks to strike. Benoist goes for a kimura and sweeps him to mount. Riddle moves to half and Benoist is looking for a submission and not a strike. Makes him eat a couple punches as he’s going for a guillotine but can’t finish it. Benoist stays in half guard and works some body shots. Riddle gets up and Benoist lands some solid strikes to end the round.

Round Score: Benoist 10-9

Round 2: Riddle starts to use his jab to keep Benoist away, but eats a head kick for his trouble. Benoist is using a straight right to bridge the gap. Riddle tries to get inside but pulls out when Benoist throws a fast combination that doesn’t connect. Riddle gets the double with Benoist against the cage. Benoist stands up and Riddle ties up underneath, still pressing him to the cage. Benoist reverses and gets a double of his own, lands in half guard.

Benoist postures up and makes Riddle eat some shots as Benoist’s nose looks to be broken. He’s bleeding a bit over Riddle. Benoist is making him eat a lot of ground a pound as Riddle moving to go for a rubber guard. Can’t connected and moves back into closed guard.

Benoist is making him eat some shots. Upkick from Riddle connects and Benoist back into guard. Both are throwing elbows, Riddle grabs an armbar from bottom but can’t quite connect with it. Lands back into full guard. Riddle makes him eat some elbows from the bottom, looking to hit the nose. Benoist postures up and hits some ground and pound as the round ends.

Round Score: 10-9 Benoist, 20-18 Benoist

Round 3: Riddle comes out strong but eats a couple big punches from Benoist. Riddle makes him eat some knees and both are going for broke. Riddle gets the double and lands in side control, landing some knees to the body. Benoist gets into half guard and then into full guard, Riddle pushes his head towards the cage, dropping some elbows in ground and pound.

Riddle is punishing Benoist out of full guard, landing some big elbows to his body. Looking to move to rubber guard and powers Riddle back, who recovers and lands back in full guard. Riddle is working the body as Benoist opens up and Riddle gets side control. Throws some knees to the body and Benoist tries to get out, landing back into full guard. Looking to go into mission control of the rubber guard and misses a triangle attempt, landing back into full guard. Mission control attempt again and loses it again.

Riddle postures up with 30 seconds left and opens up on Benoist, who pulls him back tight and is going back for the rubber guard. Riddle pops out and makes him eat a shot, landing in half guard as the fight ends.

Round score: 10-9 Riddle

Unofficial fight score: 29-28 Benoist

This is all going to depend on how that second round was scored. It was really close, I think at least, and could this being a split decision for Riddle.

Lightweight bout: Evan Dunham vs. Shamar Bailey

Dunham is currently on a two fight losing streak, TKO’d be Melvin Guillard and losing by a disputed decision to Sean Sherk. Bailey was a Season 13 member of TUF on Junior Dos Santos’ team. He’s coming off a victory over Ryan McGillivray by decision.

Round 1: Dunham connects with a quick combination early, looking to stick and move against Bailey. He’s looking to avoid the takedown and keep the wrestler at a distance. He’s winning the standup war and is connecting with a lot of punches. Stuffs a takedown and is circling away, trying to gauge his distance and then clips Bailey with a big right. Bailey connects with a big left.

Bailey’s standup looks fairly solid as he’s engaging and not going straight for the takedown. Throwing big shots but not connecting, Dunham connecting with short jabs and straight punches. Bailey is circling away but Dunham is timing him well, making him pay for it. Bailey is swinging wide and Dunham is staying inside and connecting much more. Bailey’s eyebrow is showing damage inflicted.

Front kick from Bailey backs him off, lightly connects with a pair of head kicks. Dunham is hitting some beautiful combinations to Bailey and hits a knee, Bailey gets the takedown late but can’t hold him down.

Round Score: 10-9 Dunham

Round 2: Dunham starts looking for the jab and Bailey is adjusting with lower leg kicks inside. Dunham is now pushing the pace and being the aggressor, scramble to go for the takedown and neither can get. Dunham connects with some great combinations and goes for a takedown of his own, can’t quite complete it.

Bailey backs off and Dunham hits a kick to the mid section, Bailey responds with a low kick. Front kick hits, fake front kick opens up Bailey for some punch combinations. Dunham, hurts him a bit with some punches and he’s tearing him apart with quick 1-2 combinations. Bailey is beginning to press a bit more but is eating combinations and a front kick. Dunham is mainly using his boxing game to tear him up and Bailey is tired. Goes for a bad double leg that Dunham defends easily and Dunham’s boxing and kicks are tearing up Bailey.

Takedown attempt leads to a scramble and Bailey eats a big combination, throwing wild and not connecting. Round ends with Dunham using his boxing some more to open up on Bailey.

Round Score: 10-9 Dunham, 20-18 Bailey

Round 3: Bailey is pressing pace and engaging but is eating a lot. Bailey knows he’s down and is going for it. Dunham is just dissecting Bailey at this point with quick combinations, darting in and out at will.

Heckuva performance from Bailey, who is taking a lot of punishment but isn’t going down. Dunham wins the round by keeping it up with great combinations and quick combinations. Number of strong kicks from Dunham, as well as Dunham is unloading on him and Bailey isn’t stopping.

Dunham pours it on at the end of the round as Bailey goes for a takedown, Dunham defends well and Bailey loses his mouthpiece. Round ends with Dunham and Bailey exchanging as Bailey isn’t giving up. Dunham with a tight guillotine to end the round as Bailey won’t tap.

Lightweight bout: Cody McKenzie vs. Vagner Rocha

McKenzie is coming off a decisive loss to Yves Edwards by rear naked choke. Vagner Rocha is coming off a decision loss to Donald Cerrone.

Round 1: McKenzie hits a big high kick early on and wants this to be a stand up match. McKenzie ties him up against the cage but is reversed, looking the guillotine and Rocha releases. McKenzie takes an unintentional groin kick and a quick stop.

Rocha and McKenzie exchange some wild shots, as both are swinging for the fences. Rocha takes him down and McKenzie goes for the guillotine but can’t lock it in. Rocha in butterfly guard and McKenzie eats some body shots.

Rocha in half guard and goes for a guillotine of his own into mount but can’t lock it in. Rocha goes for a kimura and McKenzie in trouble as Rocha goes for an armbar. McKenzie fights through and Rocha won’t let go, turning a scramble into a choke. McKenzie rolls through and gets into full guard. Real great grappling exchange. Cody with a couple big punches but looks a bit tired, tags him with a big right. McKenzie tags Rocha with a big right as the round ends.

Round score: 10-9 Rocha

Crowd is behind McKenzie.

Round 2: Both start off by throwing big leg kicks and not connecting. Rocha goes for the takedown and McKenzie looks for the guillotine but can’t connect. Rocha is in full guard but gets into half guard. Rocha is really intent on going for a kimura or armbar, locks in a deep Darce choke. McKenzie spins out of that and then out of full guard with hooks, landing into butterfly guard.

McKenzie looks for a guillotine and Rocha counters, looking for a kimura. McKenzie tries to sweep but ends up in Rocha’s mount. Rocha is teeing off, pinning his arm behind him. He loses it but gets back and goes for a rear naked choke and McKenzie taps at 3:49 of the second round.

Middleweight bout: Alan Belcher vs. Jason MacDonald

Belcher is coming off a 16 month layoff after defeating Patrick Côté by submission. MacDonald defeated Ryan Jensen by triangle choke at UFC 129.

Round 1: Punch exchange leads to McDonald going for the takedown, pressed against the cage by Belcher. Belcher tries to back off but McDonald won’t let him, pressing him against the cage as he goes for a takedown. Pulls guard and gets to the guard, Belcher in full guard. Eating some punishment, though, postures up but McDonald with some great hand control. Belcher postures up and starts tagging him, McDonald turtling up as Belcher goes for the finish. Can’t but McDonald grabs a kimura, defended well and Belcher in side control. back into guard and Belcher stands, dropping bombs on him. McDonald is in trouble and Belcher is unloading on him and it’s stopped at 3:48 of the first round.

Featherweight bout: Erik Koch vs. Jonathan Brookins

Brookins is coming off a decision victory over Michael Johnson. Koch stopped Raphael Assunção at UFC 128.

Round 1: Both are tentative early as Brookins goes for a single and presses Koch against the cage. Koch showing good defense as Brookins lets go and keeps him pressed against the cage. Both exchange knees to the body and Brookins with a solid elbow as well. Brookins switches back for a double twice but can’t finish either time. Koch is landing some solid knees and presses him away, connecting with a solid right hand in the escape. Brookins is clearly concerned with Koch’s striking as he ‘s moving back whenever Koch goes for something big or even motions like he’s going to throw. Another double comes up empty and he trades for a single but Koch is defending remarkably well. Fight ends against the cage.

Round score: 10-9 Koch

Round 2: Both miss jabs early on as Koch lands a solid leg kick. Koch is starting to find his range when Brookins went for a low single, can’t finish and winds up against the cage. Koch pulls away and circle back to the center, hitting a solid head kick partially blocked. Striking leads to a scramble as Brookins goes for the takedown and can’t finish, Koch winds up back to the cage again. Brookins is eating some solid punches going for the takedown; Koch’s takedown defense is really strong. Brookins goes for the drag and Koch winds up on top, Brookins with the sweep to get back to his feet and Koch’s back to the cage. Brookins is really working for the takedown and Koch spins to reverse position, throwing a knee to the body. Koch backs off and we’re back standing and his hands are fast. Brookins eats some punches to go for the takedown, which isn’t working. Drags him down by the ankle and gets on top, Koch in full guard. Koch gets back up and eats a big right from Brookins and he goes back to the ankle, not working and both are back on their feet. Round ends against the cage.

Round score: 10-9 Brookins, 19-19 total

Round 3: Koch is starting to adapt by going for more longer strikes and staying away from the clinch. Koch senses a takedown as Brookins gets in close and circles away. He’s not letting Brookins get in close and throwing more straight strikes and darting back out quickly. Brookins gets in deep again and goes for the single, Koch with some great takedown defense and Brookins comes up empty. Koch tries to get away but Brookins moves back towards the cage, again. Ref with a quick break and koch misses a spin kick but is connecting with with some quick hands. Both go for throw, Brookins winds up on his back but a quick scramble back to their feet. Brookins get him closer to the cage and locks up into the cage, again, and he’s not doing much with it. Clinch winds up with some space and Brookins connects with a left, but back for the double. Great takedown defense from Koch and round ends with them against the cage.

Middleweight bout: Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang

McGee is coming off a submission victory over Ryan Jensen. Yang recently defeated Rob Kimmons by TKO at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann

Round 1: Both come out with some tentative punching, Yang winning the position game. Both exchange some light punches but nothing with bad intentions, so to speak. McGee looking to counter more than lead. Neither fighter is commiting to big shots, more feeling out style punches and kicks. McGee is becoming more aggressive but not throwing anything strong. Slip by Yang and Mcgee chases him down and they trade, neither connecting.

Really tough round to grade … tough fight and not a whole by either fighter.

Round score: 10-9 McGee

Round 2: More feeling out again but some big shots now being thrown. McGee goes for the takedown but can’t finish, gets locked into the clinch. McGee gets away and both get back into the middle. Yang connects with a couple of big shots but can’t capitalize. McGee goes for the takedown on Yang’s takedown defense is strong, can’t finish and backs off. McGee is far more aggressive and connecting but nothing major. Yang looks to be much more tired, though, as Mcgee is in

Round score: 10-9 Yang, 19-19

Round 3: Both fighters coming out much strong and throwing caution out there. McGee is winning the standup now, connecting more with his hands. Yang seemed to have used much of what he had left in the first minute of the round. Yang rocks him with a big right and then connects with a flying knee, landing in the clinch against the cage. Gets the takedown and Court escapes from back control, Yang with a headkick. Yang is busted open over the eye. McGee blocks a takedown attempt and they land in the clinch, McGee gets the takedown and gets into mount. Yang gets out quickly. McGee is still going full bore and Yang looks like he’s hanging on. Court gets the takedown and locks in a guillotine as the fight ends. Time expires and we go to the judges’ decision.

Welterweight bout: Jake Shields vs. Jake Ellenberger

Shields most recently lost a decision victory to Georges St. Pierre. Ellenberger is coming off a KO victory over Sean Pierson.
