Detriot Lions Come From Behind to Beat the Vikings in Overtime: NFL Week 3 Commentary

Detroit Lions 26 – Minnesota Vikings 23 in Overtime

So, let’s see what’s the fans have to say!

Okay, Lions fans don’t win often, so we can let this go, right? Shayne HarndenIn what was for a long, long time an easy win for the Vikings, things have finally changed.  During this game we all got to see two types of Lions. The Viking defense held the Lions to nothing and diddly in the first half, reminding us of the Lions of old when they were the Detroit Kitties. During half time a verbal dose of NFL Cat-nip brought the Lions out like the beast that they truly are. With a flurry of offense that would make anyone forget about the winless team of a few years ago, Matt Stafford got the offense scoring more than the only 21-year-old at an underage party. On the other side, we had Donovan McNabb, who showed once again why he is a well traveled QB recently. He had the completions but hardly any yards to show for it (Eat more Chunky!!!). Jared Allen on the Viking Defense came up huge in the second half, his abusing hits on Stafford almost got the cops called, but this isn’t the Steelers QB. So at the end of overtime, after an awesome Stafford throw and Calvin Johnson catch, the Lions remain undefeated!

That’s right! It is one of the signs of the end times! Winless to perhaps undefeated!

Likewise, Grey Scherl, is already comparing the Lions to the Defending Super Bowl Champions Green Bay Packers (yes, I just like typing that): Man, who would have thought we’d have undefeated Lions? The Vikes tried, but that team is in shambles. The Lions ability to come back from absolutely nothing, take it to over time, and win, is a testament to what kind of a team they’re going to be this year. Now I just want to see them go against the Packers to figure out who the best in the NFC North is for the first half of the season.

Daniels, a neutral fan, is a bit more objective: The Lions really should have lost this game but it was a typical NFL divisional game.  Came down to the last minute

Some Lions fans aren’t quite insane yet, like Joe Violet:  I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the Lions/Vikings game, considering that I myself am a Lions fan. How many teams can say they held Adrian Peterson to 5 yards in an entire half? Not many. Next week they will be getting Nick Fairley on the field…that makes things all the more interesting.

My Take: While this was an impressive win for the Lions, this is the third straight week that the Vikings have blown a big lead.  So, tell me, does that say more about the Lions or the Vikings?  Apparently, it’s an issue of aggressiveness and coaching.  In the first half, the Vikes are sacking everyone, tops in the league.  In the second, they’re terrible at pressuring the QB (as Bill Barnwell notes).  The prevent doesn’t work for them and they need to stop.  Poor McNabb is taking the heat and it isn’t his fault.  Anywho, the Lions looked good, if not great, and I genuinely fear Calvin Johnson. That catch to set up the field goal was absurd.  He’s the best received in football.
