Lack of Offensive Line Kills NY Jets Against Oakland Raiders: NFL Week 3 Commentary

New York Jets 24, Oakland Raiders 34

Let’s get some thoughts!

Mike Gojira, a typical Jets fan, is taking pleasure in that at least the Pats lost: I suppose the one great thing about Sunday Night Football this past weekend was watching Buffalo defeat the Pats.  Hooray for the underdog!  I wasn’t very happy with the way my Jets played, though.  What the hell happened in the second half, guys?  Making a comeback with 2:00 left is not good.

Which is great, unless, you know, like Grey Scherl, you fear the Bills: The Jets are in a tricky position of needing big wins to stay aloft in a division that is more competitive than anyone expected with the emergence of the Bills as a complete and total sleeper team. They need to win games both big and little to try and edge their way to the front of the AFC East. However, Oakland has something to prove this season, and their double digit victory over the Jets should be enough to get people wondering about the Raiders this year. They’re a pretty good football team.

While the always pragmatic Daniels could care less, he just wants to make some cash: I picked this correctly.  The Jets line is in shambles and they’re not really as good as their betting lines have been indicating.  One benefit of a bombastic coach is that the public tends to side with him or against him viciously.  In this case, it’s been with.  I’m hoping that the betting lines take a few more weeks to catch up with the Raiders.  They’re quietly very good and they may be useful to pick up some easy wins.

It should be quite a show, says Andy Mac: The New York Jets came out like a ball of fire early against an easy to overlook Raiders team.  They slowly let up the gas and the dangerous Raiders took advantage of the situation.  Some died hard fans of Gang Green claim poor officiating that favored the Raiders, but one of the first things anyone who knows about sports knows is:  if you are doing your job on the field, the officials shouldn’t matter.  While this puts the Jets in a tie for second after the shocking Bills upset of the Patriots in the AFC East, I wouldn’t be shocked to see that division get three teams into the playoffs.  The other possibility is cancelling everyone else out and only getting the division winner to the show.  This will be an exciting group as more division games happen, and I look forward to seeing it play out.

My Take:  So, the Jets offense really might just be that bad right now.  Without a real offensive line, they can’t run.  Without being able to run, they rely on Mark Sanchez, who sucks.  Without being able to on Mark Sanchez, they lose against good teams.  The defense should still spank lesser offenses, and the Cromartie fumble hurt, but the offensive line is the reason they lost this game.  They can’t control the game with their defense if they can’t run.  Oakland’s D, meanwhile, is underrated, and if McFadden can do this to the Jets, is he a top 5 back already?  Seriously, answer that one in the comments folks.  I’d like to see a list of 5 who are realistically better right now.
