San Diego Chargers beat KC Chiefs in a Game that’s Too Close for Comfort: NFL Week 3 Commentary

Kansas City Chiefs 17 – San Diego Chargers 20

A close win at home for the Chargers against a team that has been terrible.  Worried?

Mike Popowich, the only die hard Chargers fan in NY starts us off: Listening to the San Diego radio now for the analysis on yesterday Chargers game, and I don’t agree that it was as bad a game as some say. Yes, the Chiefs are hurt, but they still gave us a tough game, as you expect from a division rival. One of the main factors for winning that game was that they did something they don’t do often, and that’s score to take the lead in the first half. The running game is looking great with Ryan Mathews developing into possibly a premier back, and Tolbert keeps doing what he does.
The defense is not as good as it was with Ron Rivera, but they are playing well, keeping the team in the game, and it came down to the final few minutes. The new additions of Spikes and Laboy definitely seem to be helping, and they’ll need to with the injuries mounting up. They have two more games before the bye, next week Miami at home, then Denver, so hopefully they’ll be getting some much needed rest with a winning record, which they need after the slow starts the last few years. Not to mention the Raiders won again yesterday beating the Jets.

But here’s Daniels with a cruel dose of reality: This game was closer than it had any right to be.  We may have to admit the fact that the Chargers window is slowly closing and only the benefit of being in a terrible division offering six free wins a season has kept them relevant for so long.

Wait a second, is that Grey Scherl with some Raider love?     All I can say about the Chiefs and the Chargers is that the diminished KC scoring 17 is either a testament to their own abilities, or a demonstration by the Chargers on why I’m pretty sure that the AFC West belongs to the Raiders this year.

My Take: Look, I think the division team’s play closer thing is a myth, but, well the Chiefs are hurt, but weren’t going to be historically bad.  Any team with any talent is going to be pissed at the claims that they’re tanking, and, now that they know what they do and don’t have, they can make adjustments.  Are the Chargers a bit over-rated?  Unless Mathews develops really quickly, almost certainly.  They’ll also still win this division.  As Mike showed earlier, their schedule heading into the bye is laughable.  They might not finish all that strong, but they beat teams they should and with that division?  It should be enough.
