An anthropomorphic superhero, Underdog® first debuted in 1964 on the NBC network as the alter ego to the humble and lovable Shoeshine Boy. Whenever his love interest Sweet Polly Purebred was threatened by the evil villains Simon Bar Sinister and Riff Raff, Shoeshine Boy would rush into a telephone booth, transform into the caped, superhero Underdog and save the day. Voiced by notable comedy actor Wally Cox, Underdog spoke in rhyme cementing the famous phrase: “There is no need to fear, Underdog is here!”™ in the pop culture consciousness. An instant hit, Underdog went on to become a classic animated series. The show ran in syndication until 1973, for a total of 124 episodes.
