The Extinction Team is what Scott is calling the primary squad of X-Men, his A team. Extinction because their job is to save the world and prevent the extinction of the human race. He wants them to become indispensable in the eyes of the public because they’ve been some of the best heroes in the Marvel Universe for years and it’s time to prove it.
Members include Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Hope, Colossus, Illyana, Magneto, Storm, and Danger.
Why so many former villains or people of questionable morals? Storm actually goes ahead and asks that. Scott’s response? He wants a team powerful enough to stare down the most powerful of opponents that isn’t corrupted by its own power. That no matter how much they’re hated, that they will be the ultimate team of good guys. And in the short term, it will scare people to see this roster be what the X-Men have become, which will put them in the line of fire first instead.
