ESPN’s Herm Edwards is Delusional

Columns, Top Story

I’ve heard Edwards talk and talk on ESPN and my patience has got slimmer every time I had to here him talk. His charismatic approach to things and his passion for the game creates a spark of interest in what he’s saying, but most of the time its pure garbage. I don’t get why people find him to be a genius when it comes to football. I cannot argue Edwards wasn’t a great player, but I can argue that he was a poor coach. All you have to do is look no further than his numbers. I don’t care if you have no talent on any of your team, a 56-78 regular season record and a 2-4 postseason record is just plain bad. Furthermore, his best season ever was 10-6, which he did twice. Just think about that for a second. In 8 years of coaching, he only reached the just barely amount of wins to make it to the playoffs.

Now that we’ve established that Edwards is not even close to being a football genius, we will now get to the point of this article. There’s so much talk about Andrew Luck this year and were he will go, to the point where its almost coming annoying.Seeing which team “magically” comes in last place in the NFL is intriguing, but once a story becomes a trending topic, people add their own controversial insights on what will happen. The most illogical statement on the Andrew Luck subject was Phil Simms. Simms proposed that Peyton Manning would not want Andrew Luck to come to his team, because it would be a threat to his position. That was a ballsy statement by Simms, one that I believe is totally incorrect. Going by trends, Manning is a team first player. He knows he’ll always be number 1 in the Colts franchise and he’ll always be their starter unless something drastic happens  when he comes back. Even if Manning struggles, I believe that there will always be a coaching job for him on this team to keep that sophisticated offense going, and what a perfect fit Andrew Luck would be as he calls his own plays in college, something that is very rare in the college level.

Simms comment raised my eyebrows, but Herm Edwards made my eyebrowns almost fall off. On Mike and Mike radio, Herm Edwards suggested that the Colts should play Peyton Manning this year. Why? Well, that’ s what I wanted to know because it didn’t make sense because the Colts won’t make the playoffs either way, so why risk an injury I asked myself. But the reason Edwards thinks that it would be a good idea is for other teams to look at Peyton Manning and see how great he is (as if they didn’t know already) because the Colts are going to trade him for Andrew Luck. Truth be told, I don’t really need to break this one down on why that’s one, if not the, dumbest things ever said, but I just want to for fun.

First of all, Edwards is suggesting if Manning plays well, teams will want him. Well, if Manning is playing well at the end of the season, if he plays, then why wouldn’t the Colts want to keep him themselves if they see a bright future?

Second of all, Manning has been the superglue of this team. As seen this year, once he leaves, the glue falls apart. Does it mean  Peyton Manning could’ve put up 63 points to edge out the Saints game? No, it doesn’t. The Colts have major issues, ones that they must solve in the off-season, with the biggest being of course their defense. However, Manning led virtually the same team last year into the playoffs. The only real differences between the two team are this team is more healthy. Manning didn’t have Dallas Clark, three of his running backs at one time, or his slot WRS that he relies on. For heaven’s sake, he was throwing the ball to Blair White. Who in the hell is Blair White?

Third of all, how good is Andrew Luck? In my opinion, and only my opinion, Andrew Luck isn’t all that he’s hyped up to be. I watched that USC game, and he didn’t impress me at all. Sure he did good for a college game, but he should be rolling over every college defense, not to mention USC’s soft coverage/prevent defense which has given up a lot of yards this year. Other than USC, which isn’t *that* great of a football team, who has Stanford played? Exactly. They’ve played teams that I believe a high-school team could have a chance of beating. In fact, there hardest team they faced other than USC this year was Duke, and everyone knows unless it’s basketball, Duke is more irrelevant than the word itself. I truly don’t believe that Andrew Luck would have any success against a LSU or Alabama defense, nevermind a Steelers, Jets, or Ravens defense. The point I’m getting at here is nobody truly knows how great Andrew Luck is. I mean people are guaranteeing he’s going to be awesome. A lot of things prove that wrong. No? Okay. Well who was Andrew Luck’s coach last year? That would be Jim Harbaugh. Who does he coach? That would be the 49ers. Who is their QB? A major bust who is magically having without question his best season ever, Alex Smith. Hmm… interesting.  Not enough? Alright, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Matt Leinhart, and the list goes on. The main reason why QBS become busts is because they don’t learn anything because they’re picked up by terrible organisations. Without Peyton Manning, the Colts are a complete mess and a poorly coached team and the Dolphins right now are a hot-steaming mess. While Andrew Luck has potential and talent, if he lands on one of these terrible organisations and only if he struggles, gets discourage, and listens to the media and the word bust, then he’ll end up just like all the other projected elite QBS out of college, a major bust.

What we’ve realized by Edwards’ statement was why he’s not coaching in the NFL anymore and that is because he’s delusional. He  may be just trying troll people, but that be even dumber than what he said, because he’s toying with his credibility. By no means do I believe the Colts signing Andrew Luck is a bad move. With Manning as the starter, Luck could learn a lot from him. But even though it’s not a bad move, it doesn’t make it a good move either. I believe Manning has a few more years in him and can carry this team a bit further, but they need to start focusing on their weaknesses, which are defense and running the ball. There are always going to be Andrew Luck like players that you can draft practically any year if Manning has a terrible season(s). Edwards, however, should stop making incoherent statements before he heads into Rush Limbaugh territory in the stupid comments category.
