Thiago Alves: “I will be a world champion…”

After handing Papy Abedi his first career loss, welterweight Thiago Alves has his sights set on the UFC Welterweight Title.

Alves was close to tasting gold once already at UFC 100 when he challenged Georges St. Pierre for his UFC Welterweight Title. Alves had a lot of momentum walking into the fight, but it didn’t translate well into the octagon as he was outperformed by St. Pierre, getting shutout five rounds to none in a decision. A brain malformation forced Alves to sit out of action for over a year, and he made a lackluster return to the octagon when he lost to Jon Fitch.

Thiago Alves is hoping UFC 138 was his return to prime form. In an interview with MMAHQ, Alves stated, “I’ve got Mike Dolce doing my strength and conditioning as well as my nutrition and I’ve got the best coaches in the business over at American Top Team and the best training partners.” Alves continued, “It’s just a matter of time now for me to become everything that I said I was going to become. I will be a world champion; it’s just a matter of time.”
