Breaking Dawn‘s opening day totals make it the second best-ever Single Day opening of all-time.
If the “Team Jacob! Team Edward!” shouts I heard yesterday evening at various showings of Breaking Dawn are any indication, Summit Entertainment is no doubt pleased with the penultimate film’s first day performance. Getting off to a strong start at midnight showings (okay, 12:01 AM and later, if you want to be technical), this Twilight flick may have been skewered by critics, but was met with a loving embrace by females.
Sure, this franchise is a chick thing, but for the past four months the box office has been anemic; lacking a film that opened to gonzo-type business. Released into 4,061 theaters, the film raked in $73.5 million overall on Friday, putting it just behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 box-office shattering $91 million Friday, achieved back in July. Dawn‘s opening day total was just enough to put it above New Moon‘s $72.7 million from 2009.
Internationally, the film began its roll out on Wednesday and has so far collected $8.9 million from 54 markets.
