Avengers X-Sanction’s Marvel Marketing: Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuiness, Nuff Said? Plus Thor’s Return?

Columns, Features, Top Story

So, after the issue #1 solicitation gets you in the door, but then Marvel tells you nothing about Avengers X-Sanction? They just want you to trust writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuiness?

Yes, they have a long storied history. They do comics equivalent to the big summer movie blockbusters, but would it hurt to tell us something more than “Cable is in this issue”? We knew that already.

Check out the issue #1 solicitation (at the end of this piece; I’m working from #3 backwards, because it doesn’t really matter either way – really; issue #2 and #3 could be switched and you would have no idea which one is supposed to be before or after the other except for the issue number).

Compare the issue #1 solicit to #2 and #3. For the latter two books, you don’t need the solicit since all they essentially tell you is what’s on the cover by McGuiness. I mean that quite literally.

I expect more info about a $4 comic book. I am still looking forward to this, but I’ll be spending $16 plus tax on the regular covers and I’d like to not go in blind. Pretty covers, but what else?

The solicits:

AVENGERS X-SANCTION #3 (OF 4)

JEPH LOEB (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A/C)

VARIANT COVER BY IAN CHURCHILL
VARIANT COVER BY LEINIL FRANCIS YU

• Cable rumbles with the Red Hulk as his fight to save the future carries on!

32 PGS./Rated T+ … $3.99

AVENGERS: X-SANCTION #2 (OF 4)

JEPH LOEB (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A/C)

VARIANT COVER BY LEINIL FRANCIS YU
VARIANT COVER BY STEPHEN PLATT

• Cable toe-to-toe with Iron Man as his mission of annihilation continues!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

And now, issue #1 solicit and cover.

This is only one in this four issue series that tells you something… um, well, sorta. The title actually tells you more particularly that this mini-series is an X-Men vs. Avengers sorta event. On the other hand, the solicit poses questions… assuming readers know what happened to Cable recently… which a few of us don’t.

However, the questions while inside-baseball actually try to steer readers down a path. Unlike the ones for issue #2 and #3 wwhose solicits are effectively cover blurbs… self-evident cover blurbs.

AVENGERS: X-SANCTION #1 (OF 4)

JEPH LOEB (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A/C)

Variant Covers by JOE QUESADA, ED McGUINNESS & LEINIL YU
Sketch Variant by JOE QUESADA
Blank Variant also available

• CABLE IS BACK! AND HE’S GOT JUST 24 HOURS TO WIPE THE AVENGERS FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY!
• How has Cable been reborn? Where has he been since “Second Coming”? And what dark event has driven him to destroy the Avengers? The answers are just the tip of an iceberg that threatens to smash the Marvel Universe to smithereens!
• A crucial new series by the creators behind SUPERMAN/BATMAN and HULK, Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness
• THE COUNTDOWN TO 2012’s STATUS QUO-SHATTERING EPIC BEGINS HERE!
32 PGS./Rating T+ …$3.99

I’m still looking forward to this, sorta, but I am disappointed that Marvel isn’t doing more to actually solicit the #2 and #3 issues. Do I have to say I’m not interested so Marvel doesn’t take advantage of me?

Anyhow, we have Captain America, Iron Man, and a (Red Hulk) vs. Cable on the first three McGuinness X-Sanction covers. Will Avenger X-Sanction #4 in March 2012 mark the return of Thor to the Avengers fold? He is the remaining “biggie” Avenger left. Will Tanarus have a short tenure as Marvel’s thunder god?

After all, February’s The Mighty Thor #11 in February, the same month as Avengers X-Sanction #3, does appear to show Thor return to prominence… on the cover anyway.

THE MIGHTY THOR #11

MATT FRACTION (W) PASQUAL FERRY (A/C)
COVER BY DALE KEOWN

• The Assassin’s plot revealed! Will the All-Mother survive?
• ASGARDIA RISES!
• THOR FIGHTS FROM WITHIN THE DEMOGORGE!
32 PGS./Rated T+ – $3.99

So, what say you?

Or will the cover to McGuiness’ X-Sanction #4 have Wolverine or Spider-Man on it a la the interlocking variant covers? My money’s on Thor as he is a TRUE Avenger, but we’ll see.
